I am posting this because it is very close to home. My husband works for Edinburgh University and my sister was a student there. Robert Mugabe is the first known international figure to be stripped of an honourary degree by a university , after a campaign in Scotland by the media, students past and present, and staff at the uni. A panel will this week rule that the former guerilla leader should not have been awarded the degree in 1984. Had they known the reality of the violence in Zimbabwe , it would not have granted the degree in the first place. I am sure Mugabe could not give a ****, but the leader of the opposition, Morgan Tsvangarai had this to say. " This move by edinburgh will boost the morale of the suffering people of Zimbabwe. It sends a message to the government that they are being watched and to the people that their plight is beig remembered. At last the international community is reacting to our situation." The secretary of Edinburgh university will write to him, requesting that he return the certificate. A small step maybe, but lots of small steps lead to big steps, don't they? I am proud to post this notice. Irene
Thank goodness for that. It has never been deserved. In the early days we thought he was mild mannered and good for Zimbabwe. All the while he was responsible for the deaths of thousands, more, and has progressively become worse and worse over the years. He has ruined his country, which was one of the more well off in Africa.
I wish they'd make up their mind about his travelling ban in Europe and stop allowing him to come over.
