Proclaimers back appeal for Darfur
CALUM MacDONALD June 18 2007

The Proclaimers yesterday backed a plea for desperately needed donations that would allow the continuation of disaster relief for the thousands affected by the conflict in Sudan.

Twins Craig and Charlie Reid lent their support to the Disasters Emergency Committee (DEC) Scotland appeal, which was launched last month by BBC Scotland newsreader Sally Magnusson and Taggart actress Blythe Duff.

Those in Darfur, Chad and the Central African Republic affected by the fighting in southern Sudan - described by the United Nations as one of the world's worst humanitarian crises - are extremely vulnerable to drought, disease and severe malnutrition. An estimated 400,000 people have died so far.

Craig and Charlie Reid said in a statement: "The situation in Darfur and Chad is reaching crisis point and we have to act now to save thousands of lives.

"Aid agencies are in the region now, providing shelter, food and medical care, but they are running out of funds and desperately need your support."

Gavin McLellan, chairman of the DEC in Scotland, said: "We must act now or face the fact that thousands of people will continue to suffer if aid isn't delivered soon."
