According to IMBd, Geldof appeared on the Howard Stern radio show October 27, 1990.
AmIAnnoying.com says, as a reason why Geldof is not annoying, "He allowed Howard Stern to lock him in the trunk of a car while he played guitar without getting claustrophobic."
I find this anecdote highly amusing! I am a fan of Howard Stern's anyway, and anyone who goes on his show always earns points in my book. Stern isn't afraid to say what's on his mind and doesn't take any BS...hm, sound like anyone else I would've loved to hear that episode...I wonder what the heck led up to Geldof getting in a car trunk!
If anyone has any info on this, or has heard it, please share
And I apologize to those who don't know who the heck I'm talking about. I'm not sure how well-known Stern is outside of the US. Basically he's a highly controversial DJ who is very non-PC, but he's extremley humorous and he's not an idiot.
I'm one of those who doesn't know what the heck you're talking about... In fact, about most of the tv/radio shows mentioned here in the forum... Us stupid Germans... But that anecdote really does sound funny!
It seems to have taken place in 1990 and Bob played "The end of the world" - at least that's what it says here:
ok, I got a detailed answer from someone on the Howard Stern IMDb message board. Here's what he said:
"Yes, it's true about the car trunk.
Geldof used to be a good friend of the show many, many years ago. The very first time Geldof was on Howard's radio show Geldof was plugging an autoboigraphy he had written. The first question Howard asked Sir Bob was not about Live Aid or the starving children. Rather, the first thing Howard asked about was the masturbation that Geldof wrote about. Geldof started howling and screaming at Howard. "That book I wrote is three hundred pages long,' Geldof was yelling, "it tells of hundreds of things and you find the one half sentence that mentions masturbation!" After that welcome by Howard, Geldof appeared to really love being on Howard's show. Howard did not treat Geldof with phony awe that I'm sure many others have. It appears Geldof liked that and the car trunk story is further proof.
The bit about being locked in a trunk was from Howard's channel nine TV show. I have that episode on tape -- it was one that I didn't erase (although I would have a hell of a time finding that episode from all the Howard tapes I have). Anyway, Howard was sarcastically tearing apart Sir Bob - telling Geldof what a great human he is, what a saint he is - and then Howard would just heap abuse on Geldof. He had Ted the Janitor - a big, fat, old, black man who was the janitor back at the radio station - come into the studio dressed as one of those African savages you'd see in a Tarzan movie. He had a spear, a bone through the nose and he was called King Jan-it-tor and Geldof had to pay his respect to the African king. Geldof just wanted to plug his new album and Howard said he can play a cut if he'd play it in a trunk of a car. Geldof being the cool guy he was, climbed in the trunk while playing his acoustic guitar and they closed the trunk on him. The camera kept filming the trunk while Howard and the others walked away down the hall. That may not sound funny in writing, but there's a reason why I never erased this episode -- it was funny as hell.
I miss Bob Geldof more than any other of Howard's regular guests. He had a fantastic sense of humor that matched Howard's. To this day I have never seen a host lock a guest in the trunk of a car, nor have I ever seen a guest willingly climb into the trunk of a car. Both guys just knew how to have a bit of fun and a good time."
...cool, that's all I have to say (well I could say more but I'll spare you all this time )
