>What on earth would you all have to talk about if it wasn't for your boy Bob spouting off about The Clash. <
Quoting SmokeM here again - you must have lots to talk about on your board then... On a short visit I saw two longish threads dedicated to the same subject... Aha! Hot issue over there, it seems. Must have touched a raw nerve.

I see Geldof is personally dealing with them over there.
They've closed the other Clash related thread before I could post...I've never been into Geldof, or the Boomtown Rats..I couldn't tell you anything they have done besides that one Monday song...I never found them that interesting..People here prefer the Boomtown Rat's and we over on our board are Clash fans..I'm sure there is no end of comparisons we could make about both bands or reason's for why we like who we like...to each his own..it's an age old argument who started punk..for my money I would say that The Dolls, Iggy and MC5 were the precursors to punk..and both side of the water had their top few bands that broke out at about the same time...I only see the BTR lumped in with all the bands that were signed then, who hopped on the punk/new wave band wagon... I'm not interested in name calling here..Geldof may have a right to his opinion, and maybe he honestly believes the things he said about the Clash/Joe...but I don't see how he could think his comments could be thought of, or taken as anything but childish jealousy...he's a grown man for heaven's sake..I should think that the fact that he has been knighted could be taken as a major accomplishment on his part and be happy with that, without trashing another band of the same era, particularly, in light of Joe passing away, it's in very poor taste...in this case someone that all of us, from the Strummernews board, care deeply enough about to come over here and make a stink...As far as the Clash's clothes go..there was a marriage between art, music and fashion at that time......It's more to their credit to have worn clothes that incorportated those artists as well..I'm afraid Geldof sounds like a few people I know, who didn't make it in the music business and can only make themselves feel better by trashing someone who did..Regardless of whether you are into them or not, The Clash made a huge impact overall.I love their records, you can think whatever you may think of their records..but, live they were unparalled.. and Joe was a remarkably special man...

You're making an assumption. While that may be true of many people on this site, I happen to really like Geldof's solo work and not particularly care for The Rats. In fact, I don't know all that much more about The Rats than you do. If I had to choose between The Rats and The Clash, I'd probably choose The Clash; though honestly, neither band rocked my world.
There are probably several people hanging around this site who LOVE the Clash, but now that your associates have come to bitch at us, no one's likely to admit it.
I'm sure there is no end of comparisons we could make about both bands or reason's for why we like who we like...to each his own..it's an age old argument who started punk..for my money I would say that The Dolls, Iggy and MC5 were the precursors to punk..and both side of the water had their top few bands that broke out at about the same time...I only see the BTR lumped in with all the bands that were signed then, who hopped on the punk/new wave band wagon... "The kids want a little action, the kids want a little fun...." Sorry, whenever I see the MC5 mentioned, I get a little musical flashback effect... God, I love that silly little song!
I have no idea why The Rats are considered a "punk" band, so I quite agree with you there.
Geldof may have a right to his opinion, and maybe he honestly believes the things he said about the Clash/Joe...but I don't see how he could think his comments could be thought of, or taken as anything but childish jealousy...he's a grown man for heaven's sake..I should think that the fact that he has been knighted could be taken as a major accomplishment on his part and be happy with that, without trashing another band of the same era, particularly, in light of Joe passing away, it's in very poor taste...in this case someone that all of us, from the Strummernews board, care deeply enough about to come over here and make a stink..."
I appreciate that you care deeply enough about it to come here and make a stink. Problem is, your beef is with Bob, but you're not reaching HIM. You're bitching to his fans, people who happen to like some (or all) of his work. That doesn't necessarily mean that we agree with his personal opinions, or the way he chooses to express them.
Really, it all makes me want to start singing "We're one, but we're not the same, we've got to carry each other..." and trust me, you don't want that to happen!

I doubt Strummer was a Boomtown Rats fan, and he put them down on numerous occassions (The Bay City Rollers of punk!). I don't think Geldof liked too many of his peers (and they didn't like him!). The Stranglers, the Jam, Elvis Costello and the Clash were all at loggerheads with the Rats at one point or another. The only person Geldof ever got on with was John Lydon. Everything Geldof said recently was in his autobiography (including that Strummer considered Geldof jealous of him!)
Geldof did make it! Three number ones, and hell knows how many worldwide sales is testament to that. Only a handful of artists sold much more. Dare I say it, but at the end of the seventies, The Boomtown Rats had sold far more albums and singles than any punk/new wave band including the Clash across the globe. Until the release of London Calling, the Clash were not particularly successful. http://www.surch.co.uk/-/The-Clash.html
And believe it or not, I love the Boomtown Rats records, I think the Rats were unparalled live (in the seventies) and that Geldof is a remarkably special man.

Er, thanks for the invite, but I'd sooner plait my pubic hair than waste my precious time on such nonsense.

sire bob, do us all a favour and keep ya mouth shut when you're talking to the world. jealousy is so deeply unattractive in one so old. the boomtown rats were at best bruce springsteen copyists, the clash were quite simply the most exciting live act in history - seeing a clash gig kept you happy for about 3 months. i really can't say the same of seeing your sorry ass on top of the pops - something the clash never did, and were all the more wonderful for it. bob, if it wasn't for live aid you would be completely irrelevent; thanks to live aid you are only moderately so. up until this latest outpouring of bile from your petulant lips, i quite enjoyed your grumpy old man demeanour. to dance so spastically on joe strummer's grave has won you friends only amongst those for whom the clash meant nothing - hardly a particularly honourable club to be a member of.
i was a 'punk' [whatever that means] back in the day, and at the time i felt the boomtown's first album was only mildly worse than generation x, or sham 69, or any of the other third rate pub bands that leapt on the gravy train. your punk credentials began and ended with name checking eva braun - like all the other idiots time has consigned to the dustbin of history, you confused punk with fascism. live aid helped resurrect yours and midge ure's moribund careers - a fact i can forgive because it also helped bring a truly monstrous disaster to the world's consciousness. so be grateful for your moment of fame, polish your pathetically covetted knighthood, and collect your increasingly infrequent PRS cheques for i don't like mondays. but please, shut up now.
