I happened to text Wes while Wolves match was on yesterday and he mentioned it so band must have been in touch with him or vice versa. Garry has since confirmed as well and reckons they'll be on about 9pm.

Gig is free but they do limit numbers so advice from pub is get there early to avoid disappointment. There are a (very) few rooms at the Bay Horse, but I'm going for Falcon Hotel about 100 yards up the road.

Not sure why it's not on RAM.

Would be great to meet anyone off here up there. Ian (Wes) and Liz are going.

I can offer lift from Surrey/London if anyone wants to hook up travel (and is happy to stay over). Need to know by tomorrow night though please.

I'll be seeing the Counterfeit Stones in Leamington Spa (instead of the cancelled York gig) but it's not quite the same! But hopefully will get to see the Rats again sometime soon - no pressure!

Hmmm...Leamington Spa is 75% of way to Bromyard for you, and Rats are free so you could write off Stones ticket money and pretend it was money spent for Rats, and either switch accommodation or (if already paid for) go back to LS from Herefordshire.

That way you won't be jealous and you can sweet talk band into playing Brook yourself, far more successfully than I ever could I would venture.

Just a thought you might want to run past hubby??

Bromyard is it this Sat - 12th? If so, that's when I'm seeing the counterfeits - and after cancelling all the arrangements for York, don't think I dare get my husband to reorganise again!! Oh well, if there are ever any other gigs you know about (esp if they are free!) let us know smile Winchester/Southampton would be ideal - Farnborough or Coventry area also manageable! What you've never heard of Bromyard!! It's about the size of Twyford or maybe Horton Heath I'd guess smile

Get to Worcester and head west on A44 for a few miles but be careful if lights are green cos you might miss it.

You know you want to...and sell it to hubby that you'll be far happier seeing Rats and he wouldn't want the love of his life being miserable with her mind elsewhere would he?

I've checked with Penn Festival organisers and they have confirmed it's definitely plastic bottles and 'glasses' only at the festival, so we should be safe enough.

Still waiting on my thespian son to decide if he's going to be in the school play or not. Prima Donna.

Tempted to do the 3 day camp, and head home early on Sunday. The Saturday line up looks good, especially if you like The Jam (Weller Collective on Stage 2 at 8.30pm; From The Jam at 10pm on main stage).

Not really sure about Badness and The Kommitments on Sunday night. Think a good night's sleep will be needed ahead of Monday morning.

Thanks for that info. Normally I wouldn't be worried as tickets often come within last month, but I got an email from one of organisers about a month back asking for confirmation of which day I'd booked, and when my response, coupled with question about was it paper ticket, electronic, or name on the gate, went unanswered I just wondered if others might have tickets yet.

Who else is definitely going by the way apart from Do The Rat? Joan mentioned a meet, which I'd be up for.

Finally, ArrGee, how about packing up your tent and heading to Penn on the Sunday?

I'm leaving the car at/near hotel, which isn't far from station by looks of it, so won't be driving to venue.

Happy to meet up in town though depending when you arrive then make our way. I'm aiming to be in Brentwood by 4pm latest.

Venue is only about 15 minute walk so will do that unless wet, in which case cab.

When are you arriving? PM your mobile if you want so we can keep in touch on the day.

Blimey, didn't realise we were going for that much pizza. At least stomach will be well lined for the evening beers.

Happy to report a jolly good mingle was had by BTR, Do The Rat, Mrs Do The Rat and yours truly, including pizza but, luckily for the good people of Brentwood, no singing (at that point).

Plenty of singing during the Rats set, fuelled by some of the 300 beers on tap, and an appreciative crowd of 200-250 maybe obviously enjoyed it, fuelled by some of those 300 no doubt.

Shame the curfew on the site coupled with earlier overrun meant set was limited to first 8 singles plus Close As You'll Ever Be and Joey, but in some ways that helped as most songs were more familiar to a majority.

Interestingly and 'old friend' of band from Wexford (forget his name) took a guest slot and did bass and vocal on Joey and Diamond Smiles; did an ok job but could have done with a bit more rehearsal as some verses got repeated and sometimes the words escaped him, but didn't detract too much.

Also the first time I've seen them finish (on She's So Modern) then actually come back to play Mondays as an encore, even if they didn't actually leave the stage as compere said 'd'ja want one more?' about 7 times to the point where I was thinking could have got 2 more in if you shut up.

Hoping it stays dry for Penn, and looking forward to a bit more mingling with BTR and Lisa.

That's a shame, I always get hacked off with the lesser bands overrunning so the headliners lose an encore or even worse as in this case. Hope that Penn was better.

PS School play was pants, should have persuaded ArrGee Junior to come along after all.

Penn was really good, included everything from Friday plus Neon Heart and the two Feelgood songs. Seem to have dropped She's Gonna Do You In and I Can Make It If You Can off recent sets. Possibly the best airing of Looking After No 1 I've ever heard today - really tight and delivered with power. Could see the band were enjoying themselves at that stage.

Even The Farm, waiting in the wings, were singing along to Mondays unashamedly. I then caught Garry briefly post gig as Farm were playing. Asked him what he thought of them and he (in complete seriousness) said 'Who are they?'. One-Nil to the Rats....

I think it's just a case of Garry honestly not knowing a band, which is fair enough. All I know about The Farm is the single All Together Now which I'm nearly certain Garry would recognise if he head it on the radio. It has certainly gotten enough airplay over the years.

Anyway hope you all enjoyed the gig and the pizzas.

Just got back home after a great weekend. I thoroughly enjoyed meeting up with Suss, Mrs & Mrs Do The Rat, and Lisa. Great company, music, beer and pizza. Special thanks to Mrs Do The Rat for remembering to print a discount voucher for Pizza Express.

To answer a couple of things above...

Set-lists - festivals tend to book bands to play for x amount of time - the band would love to play for longer.

At Brentwood - the guest was a friend of Garry & Simon. He was in their first band at school just before they became Boomtown Rats.

At Penn - The Farm were really nice blokes and massive Rats fans. Afterwards they were saying how they went to see the Rats in the 1970s and had their records etc. The bass player was telling Simon and Garry that he would never have become a musician if it has not been for Tonic For The Troops inspiring him. The Farm were saying they only had a couple of hits to put on the set-list and were envious because the Rats had so many great songs. It was good fun.

Great weekend at Penn! Rats were obviously the BEST and enjoyed by all my group. My 16 year old said it was the highlight of the festival, so have trained him well! Good to meet the band afterwards as well as Suss and BTR - and enjoyed the beer too! Shame it's all over now - but looking forward to the next time ........

Might start listening to The Farm now and see are there any obvious Rats influences. Sometimes we judge a band of one song as that's all we know about them- at the risk of missing out on different aspects of their music. The bass player's story is very touching- hope Gary is suitably enlightened about The Farm now, but something tells me in the late eighties or early nineties Garry wasn't really into the music scene and was probably a bit disillusioned after the break up of the Boomtown Rats. Anyway all's well that ends well.

It's a fair point about the band having only a limited time on stage, meaning they have to be very selective in what they play.
