they tried to get everyone out last time but some people just wouldn't budge.that wasnt the governments fault.the people of new orleans probably realise just how serious this could be
they had no choice but to get it right this time. Last time it was shocking.
Tango they knew the hurricaine was on its way but did nothing in preparation for this and many people were left stranded. Not everyone fled when they could, I know but the government didn't act.
Texas being President Bush's home state would be well taken-care-of. But all of us in the US are really worried about this next one, so soon. Thank you all for your concern. Louisiana, Mississippi, Alabama residents have suffered a lot because of our government mishandling. At least now we should be prepared.
Global warming is a threat but then there was a 1900 hurricane in the same location that killed 8,000 people there. We study the earth's activities as much as we can but we still don't understand things. Could be changes in magnetism or solar winds, sunspot activity. Even India is being battered this past week in a similar manner.
Unfortunately a bus carrying elderly evacuees caught fire somehow this morning on a Texas highway and 20 people perished.
In Washington the air is very dense and humid & it feels like you are breathing through cotton batting, which I guess is the hurricane's influence, and the sky is an irridescent gray, kind of strange out. The hurricane is supposed to hit tonight or early Saturday morning.
We are seeing a lot of TV coverage of people in traffic for hours, and there are some fuel tankers bringing gas as people run out of petrol.
that was a very poetic description.why is it the elderly who always get hurt?its not fair cos it makes you giggle slightly.i know its shocking but when your in a house full of 10 yr old buys they alugh and it makes me laugh.its contagious.i feel really mean now
Thanks Tango. Some of the people who are on those buses came from nursing homes and hospitals.
Meanwhile, as I am at work, a customer just said New Orleans is getting flooded again because the levees have not held. The city is probably empty of people but it's still sad.
It always seems to be the poorest and most vulnerable who get hit by everything.
I think the argument re: global warming refers to the frequency of such events, in the past they were fewer and further between. Is it too late to change have we made our bed? Can we do anything now? It is so frightening.
Thanks Jules, Tango & Mags of course...as time is going by, the sky has truned a bright platinum white, as if there's sun, but there's not; it's bright and gray at the same time! We are something like the distance from London to Glasgow away, but feeling Rita's ominous presence.
my m8 lives in texas somewhere but iv not heard from her for a bit.these things are so big and you just dont get a feel for the scale of these things on tv
I don't see how it's possible for you to be feeling the effects of Rita in DC already. I think you're probably feeling the effect of another weather system.
I heard that the bus was filled with elderly from a nursing home, several of them with oxygen tanks, and one of the tanks exploded.
When it involves Texas, Bush is always willing to help out.
Where was he during hurricane Katrina, and 4 days afterwards?
At his ranch in Crawford, Texas, clearing brush away.
The same place he was slowly reacting to 9/11 - Texas.
He should go there and stay there.
Have any of you heard of Bill Maher? This is from him, directed toward Mr. Bush.
"...The cupboard's bare, the credit card's maxed out, and no one is speaking to you: mission accomplished! Now it's time to do what you've always done best: lose interest and walk away. Like you did with your military service. And the oil company. And the baseball team. It's time. Time to move on and try the next fantasy job. How about cowboy or spaceman?!
Herbert Hoover was a sh*tty president, but even he never conceded an entire metropolis to rising water and snakes.
On your watch, we've lost almost all of our allies, the surplus, four airliners, two Trade Centers, a piece of the Pentagon and the City of New Orleans…Maybe you're just not lucky!"
Good American political humor, right there.
Here's some more. Go to http://www.google.com. Type the word "failure" without the quotation marks, and click the "I'm Feeling Lucky" button, routing you directly to the best option. You'll love it.
There's a large anti-war/anti-Bush march in Washington DC today. Maybe it will make it onto BBC. The hurricane lost power but there is a lot of rain and electricity is out. The weather here is much cooler than yesterday and the storm seems to be headed up through the middle of the US but very slowly. Since our weather is OK, there were a lot of marchers mobilizing (getting their signs painted etc) outside the bookstore where I work at the University of Maryland and then they were boarding special buses to go downtown.
Apart from looking like a self-satisfied monkey and his slightly dim cousin, these two are dead ringers for a gay marriage. And what's with this camp military guard of handsome young men in crisply pressed black uniforms.
i saw that news report this morning and was very proud of the way blair handled the interview.he wasn't even in the conference centre at the time yet he was the one who had to apologise fir it all.i couldn't help but laugh when he was asked which of the possible new tory leaders he feared most he replied, 'i dont, theyll get it wrong anyway'
