Not taking any particular stance but there are a few great songs about riots and civil disturbances.

This is Carter USM from 1997- And God Created Brixton (Brixton riots backdrop)

Time For Heroes by The Libertines touches on riots and upheaval and the lyrics are just totally brilliant- Press "show more" for full lyrics.

You've surprised me there. Fully expected to find reference to I Predict a Riot and Riot in Cell Block #9, and possibly White Riot.

I'm a sucker for compilation themes, dating back to putting together C90s with every song having something in common. Also something I've done for pop quiz rounds e.g. link between Always The Sun, Telegraph Road, Sign of the Times, Mirror Man, Independent Woman etc?? (but I don't supply titles).

Will have to think about other riot related (or inspired) tracks.

Thinking about it..the first Clash album almost counts as a Riot compilation in its own right. London's Burning, Police and Thieves, White Riot, and (tenuously) Hate and War.

I feel a C90 coming on...

It was more an excuse to get people to listen to Carter USM than a comprehensive list! Time For Heroes by the Libertines again has rioting as a background and the lyrics are just brilliant so had to include that.

The Rats Elephants  Graveyard is about the Liberty riots in Miami 1n 1980/81. House Burned Down may be the consequence of a riot!

Half Man Half Biscuit recorded Trumpton Riots, of course. There has to be  songs about the Poll Tax riots and the Miners Strike must have turned up some songs about riots. Most of the eighties indie bands were  a bit left leaning and there must be loads of examples of songs  on that subject.

I think Bob Dylan has some sort of Internet radio show where he plays songs which are thematically linked

One of my favourite Men They Couldn't Hang tracks deserves inclusion.

Try http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=GzKv5gjOzTA for 'The Ghosts of Cable Street' with suitable video

Might have to add Panic by Smiths as well. I'm nearly up to one side of my C90 now smile

Those two MTCH  songs were quite good and with interesting video's. Deanshanger,  a really great song out in the mid nineties by a group called Prolapse was about how crap (in their words) the eighties was...."the miners strike always on at the end of the news...."

Its got a brilliant undertow of a young girl worried about going out for the night contrasting with the overt message of societal dissatisfaction. Might take a few plays for those who haven't heard it before but it was one of my favourite songs from the nineties. The singers strong Scottish accent doesn't take from it either.
