What is the most you have you spent on a record?

The most I've spent on a record or cd was £35 ( or E40) for the Bob Geldof anthology just to have all the unreleased songs and some b sides I didn't have.

Bob Geldof and The Boomtown Rats are the only acts I couldn't live without having all their works. Most cd's can be got fairly inexpensively, one way or another. I found a copy of Dogs Die in Hot Cars album Please Describe Yourself (Hi Laibach) in a charity shop in Dublin costing one Euro, which still had a twenty euro sticker on the label so charity shops can be good. One Euro is about 80 p.

With more people downloading ,and loading their existing songs onto mp3 or computer many have taken to selling their cd collections. I've gotten stung by many much hyped albums not being up to my standard, whatever that is, so I am reluctant to pay over the odds for music. Having said that I go along with the 'respect the value of music ' idea as well.

I bagged the anthology for £7 at one point (just before it dropped to a fiver), but it seems to have got rare and now is selling at about £35 again. They may have a few signed copies left at Geldof HQ. Having all the albums and most of the singles anyway, £7 was more than enough for the few tracks I was missing.

Picked up 3 LPs (James, Stranglers, Inspiral Carpets) at the weekend for £7 from our local Oxfam. Sadly charity shops tend to look at eBay before pricing which can lead to some pretty bad mis-pricing on some records, especially the poor condition re-issues which stay there for months on end. Just have to be lucky and get there when someone with taste dumps their record collection. Suss must have been there the other day dumping his Boyzone records smile

Since hearing Arnold Layne, I'm sure I don't really have to have everything. Spotify is great for trying before buying. Hence the recent solo Geldof and Cott CDs are conspicious by their absence. Oh and Jiggerypipery as well (not sure it is on Spotify).

Well I have to admit I bought 2 copies of the 2 CDs by Jiggerypipery - one set for my mother-in-law cos she's Scottish and I thought she would like the bagpipes! And she did - so got a few brownie points there! Nearly got caught out talking about it with Simon at Wolverhampton when he asked which CD I liked best - and I was struggling to think of any titles, but think I got away with it - especially as I said the drumming was the best bit

If anthologies and the like count then the £50 I spent on Jam 6 CD Direction Reaction Creation boxset is prob tops for me. Did spend £25 on Wah's deleted CD Songs from the Repertwah a year or two back, and about the same on a dutch label film theme CD (100 tracks on 5 discs) just to get a CD copy of Wandrin' Star.

Perhaps the greatest outlay relative to income was the £10 I lashed out on 12" Lookin' After No 1, a very big dent in my life savings to date in 78 or 79 when I acquired it.

Not sure about others but I have had a lifelong tendency to not hold on to records, generally buying them and then selling them on second hand when I'd had enough of listening to whatever album.

I love the Forever Changes album by Love and played it so often about ten years ago than I never want to hear it again. I do tend to tire of any particular album within a few weeks. Music is one of those magic products that had to constantly be re indulged in, like a drug, when the hapless victim will always want more and feel slightly dissatisfied each time, looking for the perfect fix, which never comes.

ArrGee -just out of curiosity if you use Spotify, when was the last time you heard an album on that, then bough the album in HMV, not a second hand copy?

I find there is some much stuff on Youtube that its just a matter of searching on YouTube to get an indication of how a band sounds. Whatever this weeks new cool, trendy outfit is, they are sure to have lots of material out there for fans to sample.

I remember in the eighties buying albums like The Wedding Presents George Best or 10, OOO Maniacs In My Tribe just by reading about them in the NME and Melody Maker. Turned out the were both pretty good!

Can't remember the last album I bought in HMV because they don't sell vinyl. I did buy XX by The XX on vinyl after checking it out on Spotify.

Paid £100 for Difford & Tilbrook (Squeeze) solo CD. Cant find the CD anywhere in UK. Found the CD on a US website. The UK Post Office also had the cheek to make me pay vat on it as well
