Have been lurking for awhile. Really enjoy the Rats, but Geldofs solo stuff much less so. Anyhow, wonder if any of you will know the answers to these:
The Rats left Ensign and signed with Mercury and released Mondo Bongo. On this album was Banana Republic. Banana Republic was the first single released off the album, yet was released on the Ensign label. How come?
I first came across Up all Night during the summer of 1981. There was a prize in "Smash Hits" which was 12" of Up All Night. I'm sure it was of blue vinyl. Anyone out there that could coroborate this?
Also, Up all Night was released in Germany as a 12" super disco mix.........was this the same as the version released on the remasters CD V Deep?
I've got a box full of Smash Hits from about 80 to 82 so might well be able to answer that if I can find it. Also have the 12" for comparison with CD so hope to help there too.
Afraid it won't be for a couple of days (away over weekend) but will have a look if no one else can confirm before then.
Not sure about labels query though. Do remember early Banana Republic singles claiming to be from forthcoming album 'Bongo Crazy', later changed to 'Mondo Bongo', so fact it was pressed ahead of album may mean Ensign had contract for that but nothing beyond. No idea really as I don't know how those number of singles/albums/years deals work.

Banana Republic was released before Mondo Bongo and it was between the release of the 2 that the Rats changed record company.Up All Night was released as a single and 12 inch in Germany and IS ON the American version of Mondo Bongo.I believer it got in the top 40 in Germany and got some radio play in the USA.There is/was a video on youtube for Up All Night where Bob has a big snack wraped around him.

Yes, welcome! I take it you are a Squeeze fan as well as a Rats one - good taste. Re: mickey taking (what a vicious slur!), only ever done to reciprocate, never one to start it

Yes am a Squeeze fan, love them. Infact had Glenn Tilbrook play at my 40th - one of the best days of my life. The Rats were my first band and for the most parts their output stands up to any of their contemporaries.

Just got round to checking this and can confirm the versions are different, but only in the latter stages. Maxi Single is a 5.29 duration whereas V Deep version runs to nearly 7 minutes. They start to vary about half way through - only listened the once but it's basically longer repetition of drum bass bits and a few more say it ain't so Joe's on the CD. To be honest it all got a bit confusing which one I was listening to from the point they went in different directions
I've got that track on a variety of discs and always been conscious that it never seems the same twice. I'm sure some are the same, and I've never fully analysed, but that must be the Rats' track with more versions than any other surely?

Wow - that must have been great! So just out of interest does it cost a lot to hire him - or even the Rats? Maybe a thought for my 50th - and as that one is a very long way away, plenty of time to save up!

For Rats you'd need to get a quote from Peter Barton (via Rock Artist Management website). Might take a little while to sort out though so if you've only got a few months to play with before big day prob worth starting now.
So just out of interest does it cost a lot to hire him - or even the Rats? Maybe a thought for my 50th - and as that one is a very long way away, plenty of time to save up!

My wife booked Glenn through his manager. I dont know how much he cost, but we are talking a lot....4 figs. But Glenn didn't just play at my party. I never knew anything what was planned by my wife apart from having a party at a local sports association. He completely surprised my wife by suggesting that he should surprise me at home. So at 5pm he knocked on my door. Imagine my surprise when I opened the door to see him.
We sat in my garden and drank beer. We talked about squeeze, his future plans and his touring US. He was great. Stayed until 7.30. Then he left to get ready. He played a gig from 9pm to 12am. Not just Squeeze songs but many many requests. Plus people got up and sang their favoutrite songs. He was like a human jukebox.
Lastly played "Perfect day" like the BBC children in need version with my friends singing different lines. A really great night and a lovely bloke.
He said to keep in touch. We even got an invite to Squeeze re-union in Deptford before their US tour a few years ago. Another high.
