Once famously described as licentious, festering reprobates and leprous anti-establishment scumbags and banned from playing in their home country, its difficult to overestimate the shock and awe The Boomtown Rats inspired in late 70s Ireland. Fronted by one of Irelands greatest lyricists" (Niall Stokes, Hot Press), they set out to disrupt, disturb and question what it meant to be young in the Ireland of the mid-70s. It is almost inconceivable to imagine the emergence of many an Irish band that followed without The Rats utterly altering the cultural landscape and blasting a way for others to follow.

Formed in 1975 in Dun Laoghaire The Boomtown Rats exploded out of Ireland in 76 and their fast, loud, furious music and their fast loud furious attitude meant they became part of the burgeoning punk scene. Singer Bob Geldofs defiant motormouth arrogance and flagrant disrespect for authority endeared him and his band to every youth who felt weighed down by the heavy handed blandishments of church and state who did everything in their power to stop them playing their native country. In Britain The Boomtown Rats first toured with the Ramones and Talking Heads rocking and mocking the status quo alongside the Sex Pistols, The Clash, The Jam and The Stranglers. They became one of the biggest bands of the late 70s/80s with a string of top ten hits and platinum albums, earning them Brit Awards, Ivor Novellos and Grammy Awards along the way. Making history as the first Irish band to have a UK no 1 hit with Rat Trap, they went on to top the charts in 32 Countries with I Don't Like Mondays and racked up 6 chart topping albums. In 1984, inspired by a TV report on the famine in Ethiopia, Bob Geldof organized the star-studded Band Aid and co-wrote its "Do They Know It's Christmas," one of the biggest-selling singles in history. The next year he organised Live Aid. Fittingly The Boomtown Rats came home to bow out with their final show at SelfAid, an unemployment benefit in Dublin in 1986. The poignant final song they played was their first big hit Lookin After No.1.

Reading reviews from the past there is a curfew at 10:30pm

So they better get on stage early. Still on the upside, if Mondays is the encore, it might not be played. Specials didn't get to play Ghost Town last year!

As there seems to be a few around here going, might be worth having a post gig party somewhere in the city.

This one looks perfect. Live unplugged music and a cool name! Anyone up for a rendition of the Wild Rover? I'll bring my guitar.

Excellent news, couldn't be better. Great that it is an intimate gig, rather than a huge festival, and let's hope there are some more around the Uk and Ireland. Interesting for Garry Roberts is that ZZ Top, one of his favourite bands is playing at the Marquee, Cork a few days earlier.

Cork is a nice city and the locals like their music, so with it being high summer there should be a sellout crowd. Train from Dublin is about two and a half hours, so it's all set up, just waiting to book tickets when they go online.

Consider flying in via Shannon( near Limerick)and then getting a train or coach to Cork. Also Waterford might be an option, but the airport is small and there are only a few flights per day.

There is a sail and rail option which has a set fixed fare that does not fluctuate, and there are always lots of seats. Eg Train Euston to Holyhead, fast ferry to Dublin in two hours, and then get train to Cork, which is just over two and a half hours. Of course the journey is a lot longer, but you can book even the day before, and the fares are set, and do not go up and down. Not a bad option if you have some time to spare and the trains are high speed and very comfortable.

I'm looking for the fastest in and out.

Plane to Cork airport (arrive 3pm), taxi to venue, walk to pub, taxi to Cork Airport, Plane to London (depart 8am). Should be home around 11am. It's faster for me to get to the airport than to Euston, as there is a non-stop bus from our local underground station that takes me straight there.

On my Dublin trip I made it to the gig with an hour to spare. Lack of an early bus, and having a few spirits on the way over, meant it was handy having a room that night. (Thanks suss) Also the flight home wasn't too bad at around 7pm, which meant I was home by 10pm.

Did consider staying the night, but next flight out of Cork isn't until about 9pm, which would mean getting back after midnight, and I'm not sure I really want to hang around that late. Was thinking of staying for Christy Moore, but as Mrs. ArrGee isn't coming, decided not to.

Still easier and cheaper than the Isle of Wight.

Those other options only work if you have lots of spare time. Still one of the joys of the Internet is journey planning, and seeing alternative ways of getting to places and trying to save money too.

Once I was madly planning a journey to Amsterdam from Dublin via Harwich. It would have taken nearly two days to save a few euros. The plane journey is 90 minuites and a much better option!

Flying seems to be the cheapest everytime these days. Did look at a coach or train+ferry to Cork with the idea of going early on the Friday and sleeping overnight on the way home, but it both instances it would take longer and be more expensive. The Isle of Wight would have been a logistical nightmare, and was also more expensive than flying to Cork, not to mention more time consuming.

The only issue with Cork is finding something to do between the gig ending and the flight taking off, but by the time I get into town, get kicked out of a pub at closing time and catch a cab to the airport, there shouldn't be too long to wait. And as it's July, the rain will be warm

As pubs around Marquee will be heaving, and venue will no doubt have a dire and overpriced selection in plastic 'glasses', is it worth suggesting a meet in town before heading out to venue? Haven't checked location of that Clancy's but anywhere on venue side of town would be good. I've got no plans other than land/check in/drink prior to gig. Would be great to chew the fat with at least some of the many on here travelling to gig, and hopefully meet one or two for first time.

Haven't double checked but from memory there should be ArrGee, Jules, Noel, Scottie, Adrian, Joke, Wes, plus me. Apologies if I missed anyone. BTR? Musicmania? DoTheRat?

Was planning to contact Clancy's to reserve an area, pre and post gig. Will do that nearer the time, but there are alternatives so feel free to investigate. I happened to find that looking for late bars. Also it has music on a Friday night. iang will be there but probably in a professional capacity selling t-shirts. Should take no longer than a hour to walk to the venue. Only a mile away.

I was in Cork in the summer of 2011, and the big HMV store in the city centre is now closed for good.Little did I realise then that a reformed Boomtown Rats would be playing in Cork, or that the city's large HMV store would go out of business. Funny how things turn out sometimes. HMV seemed a solid business, and the chance of the Boomtown Rats playing anywhere seemed remoter than the stars.

The pity of HMV closing is that it stops the casual music fan from picking up some old Rats cd's or greatest hits in the months before the gig. Yes they can download the songs but the purchase of physical product in now pretty rare in much of Ireland. Lots of times I used to impulse buy a bargain cd in HMV, but who knows how many of the Rats cd's would have sold if HMV was still in business.

All to be researched. Ideal is somewhere near the hotels that is open late (at least until 2am) and doesn't charge to get in. Easy enough for pre-gig, but might be trickier post-gig. Totally agree with the Bon Jovi reasoning. Either of the other headliners, Stone Roses or Killers would have made me consider it.

Most of the late night bars in Cork are open until about 2 am. There was a government crackdown on late night clubs and drinking culture a few years ago in Ireland, and 2am seems to be the latest one can have 'fun' when not at home.

I have a ticket for the Rats in Cork, but have not booked a hotel yet. The cheapest accommodation is a number of 'youth' hostels, or tourist hostels, just bring a passport for ID. A shared room with maybe 5-10 in room would cost under 20 euros, that is for a basic roof over your head for the night.

I have sent them an email, but they haven't replied yet. Before spreading news of a meeting place, I want to be sure they will let people in after 11pm.

As an aside, after the abridged show at the Isle of Wight, what are the prospects of a longer show in Cork? As far as I know no support act has been announced and doors open early (1830). If they get on stage at 8pm, they could do a two and a half hour show. If it's good enough for Elvis Costello, then it's good enough for the Rats

There was an ad on RTE Radio 1 promoting Elvis Costello at the Marquee, Cork today. Maybe they will start promoting the Rats too, as it is nearer the date of the gig and the weather is good.

Not sure if it was the Pistols or whoever, but some of the famous punk bands did very short sets, with no encores. I don't think I could stand a two or three hour show by any band. After a certain amount of time you start to forget which songs they have played and it gets a bit tedious.

90 mins is about right- it's good enough for the beautiful game smile

Pulp did two hours at Brixton in 2011 and it was far from tedious. They even left a couple of songs off the set list. Longest set I ever saw was Julian Cope who did three hours on his own, again far from tedious. The worse gigs seem to last for three hours yet amazingly are quite short. You know when it's a good gig when the band run out of songs to play, go back to the start of the set and drag the guitarist back from the bar

Re Cork tickets I had a brief chat with Pete Briquette after the gig in Ifield on Friday night. He said that over half the tickets for Cork had been sold, and the band most likely will be playing in Ireland/NI at some stage, in Dublin and Belfast. No specific details but that's the word from a very friendly Pete.

I've no idea when they will play in Dublin and Belfast, but if they are going to play these large cities that sounds like a proper old fashioned tour. Logically dates in cities like Manchester, Glasgow, London, Birmingham, Liverpool etc would be on the cards. Not sure if they will try to record a new album and then tour or just go ahead with a tour.

Pete also said they are going to re-release the Greatest Hits album.There was a very friendly vibe between all the band members on Friday night.Garry was beaming with happiness at one stage. Geldof was flirting with young Darren. When the 'Boomtown Rats' song/chant went up all the band were dancing along and seemed to be overjoyed. The crowd was chanting 'Boomtown Rats' like at a football match.

The idea of playing a few gigs and then packing it all in seems a bit unlikely. If they take things slowly then I think we could be in for a few good years . Don't see why Bob cannot do his own solo type thing and also play with the Rats.

Before the gig Alan said to me that he enjoys working with the band and that they all get along very well. It was clear to everyone I would say, that they were all loving it and they gelled really well together.

Interestingly enough I had a conversation with suss at Greenwich where we wondered how long they could carry on in their current guise. It was hard to see how after four years of gigs with pretty much the same set and no real gains in audience that it would keep going for much longer. Had Geldof and Briquette not returned, it would have been just the usual suspects going along with me when they were in London. Not sure I'll do anymore trips to Ireland for gigs.

Trouble for suss and wes is that they'll be blowing their pension on all this in the next few years.

Pete just mentioned re-releasing the Greatest Hits, did not go into detail about which tracks. I detect a slight cynicism in you about new tracks in general. For a band that was always good enough in the past, the idea of keeping everything fossilised and just going through the same old motions to me is not what a band like the Rats are about.

If they do not make a classic new album then we can at least expect a half dozen reasonably good songs.. I don't see any need to rush things, it's so easy to take for granted what a few months ago would have been a pipe dream.

No just when a band release a hits album with one or two new tracks unavailable elsewhere. I think the Stones have done this two or three times. If The Rats do what Suede have done, and release a new album that stands alongside their better efforts then I'd be delighted. But I fear it would be more Chinese Democracy than Bloodsports. And should they make a new album then it would constitute a fair proportion of the live set.

One of the reasons I jacked on football season ticket a year ago was to free up the weekends for potential gigs, and the band sans BG certainly provided some memorable nights and trips. I was happy enough with roughly once every two months, invariably on a weekend night, and rarely over £15 to get in. In fairness it wasn't too much of a drain once costs and time off were spread out.

The notion of a proper 'tour' with the reunited band generates mixed feelings. Would love to apply the same obsessive devotion that football has had over too many years, including midweek trips to northern outposts and so on, but likelihood is a tour would mean x amount of weeks rather than the odd day off work. Doubt my employers would be sympathetic, let alone Mrs S or the bank manager.

Sad fact is it'll be pick and choose time. The irritation is the nature of the game means preferable dates will get added after commitments to previous ones have been made.

Still, won't get too carried away until I hear a tour is in the offing.

As for Wes, isn't he already drawing on his pension? smile

In February, Geldof admitted to The Cork News he is a bit nervous about the upcoming gig in Cork on Friday, July 5th. I do gigs with my own crowd, but its a bit more of a weight really with the Boomtown Rats, he said. The band arose out of an economic social condition and we actually ended the band with an unemployment benefit in Dublin in 1986. Now, almost 30 years on, its almost the exact same conditions.

Mr Aiken personally asked the band to perform in Cork after it was decided they would reunite to play Isle of Wight Festival.I found that the songs I wrote in the 70s could have been written today. said Geldof.

With next year set to mark 10 years of the Marquee series, Mr Aiken is remaining tight-lipped about whats in store. However, he is seeking funding for a documentary to mark the venues decade in entertainment.

Personally the cost isn't as important as the time. I will spend less time travelling to and from Cork than either of the UK dates. And as I get back early Saturday morning will still have the weekend with the kids. I have pretty much stopped going to football at the weekend simply because it takes up the whole day, and there is too much to be done. I just bought tickets for midweek games and the cup games that could be potentially be midweek games. Very grateful to Wigan for reaching the cup final!

Will be getting a train about 10am or 11 am so should be in Cork after 12. 45 or 13.45.

Hotels in Cork seem to be a bit on the expensive side. Best offer so far is a single room to myself in Kinlay House, 35 euros for the Friday night. Think I'll go for this as they seem not to be getting any cheaper. Will think it over and book tomorrow.

The day before. Doing a big trip then. Well I hope to be in Cork at 6pm, which will probably be enough time to get a pint or two of Murphy's before heading to the venue. And will go back to Clancy's after the gig and stay there as long as I can before getting to the airport for my 8am flight (yawn!).

Have just been online with Irish Rail. Got a bargain return fare to Cork for 32 euros incl fees. Anyone travelling from Dublin by train should book early online as the fares always go up, not down.

Also got good bargain hotel near the train station so everything is ready to roll on 5 July.

I am in Dublin from this Thursday evening, 27th as I am helping out with the Youbloom Fest Friday night till Sunday. Taking pics at different venues, so have a delegates pass. Hope to meet Nigel Grainge, Rupert Hine etc. Pete and Bob may be there, though they have a gig next weekend on the Sunday. All the events are open to the public. The daily workshops would be good for musicians and aspiring musicians. Staying in Dublin till the 3rd, when I am going down to Cork by train. Joke and I will also be training it back to Dublin on the Saturday morning for flights. Have not booked yet though. Probably about 9ish. What time is your trin Noel?

Hi Scottie, hope you have a good time in Ireland. I will be getting the 11.20 am train back to Dublin on the Saturday. If you wish to save money you would be well advised to buy you Irish Rail tickets online now, rather than waiting as the prices will go up nearer the date. You can buy your tickets online from anywhere and collect them at the ticket machine in Heuston Station- in my experience tickets will be two or three times dearer a few days before travel so best get them asap.

Remember you need to travel from Dublin Hueston Station to Cork (Kent Station). You can get the Luas tram from Dublin city centre to Heuston Station. There is a direct bus service from Hueston station to Dublin airport (Dublin Bus 747 service) if you need to get to Dublin Airport directly when you are coming back.
