1978 - The best year of our lives - Maybe

Personally, I'd plump for 1995 or even 1990, but I can go with 1978...

Research published last week in New Scientist magazine by a team from an Australian university claimed that 1978 was the best year of our lives. The study, conducted by the University of Canberra, based its results on an index called the Genuine Progress Indicator (GPI), a suggested replacement for gross domestic product (GDP) as a measurement of a nations economic growth. GPI measures social and environmental prosperity as well as financial growth. Under GPI, the researchers calculated factors such as crime rate, pollution, car accident rates, loss of leisure time and the cost of unemployment to rate 17 countries over the years.

They found that, in terms of worldwide prosperity, 1978 was as good as things got and that we have endured a long decline ever since.  While economic growth may have continued since the late 1970s, the reports authors said we have failed to make a social profit.

I'd go with 1978/79 - got into music and the Rats then. Spent most of my time sitting in a room on my own reading and mainly listening to TFTT, watching the Rats' appearances on TV/interviews, and collecting Rats articles from mags. Just a time when you could be selfish and not really have to do much apart from the odd bit of homework, still a few years away from O' levels and college and serious stuff like that.

With regard to reading, was really into Craig Thomas having first read Firefox and then being delighted that he'd written a book called Rat Trap! Even tried my hand at writing - a very good short story about submarines and I think it ended up with Greece and Yugoslavia going to war with each other! Maybe a bit weird - but got 3rd prize in the Farnborough Festival of Arts. Maybe one day I'll write a proper book ...

Apart from my haircut, wardrobe and (lack of) relationships I think 78 was a blinder, for many of the reasons Lisa mentions. Was a great World Cup as well.

I was a bit scared by the attitude of 77 if I'm honest, but by 78 could sort out the newer bands who had a bit more to offer than naked aggression, and refined my tastes accordingly. Rats were ahead by a country mile, with only Jam coming anyhere close upon release of tube station (October??) and subsequent into 1979.

Was my coming of age I guess. Didn't have a clue about the economics the article spouts on about mind you.

ha, sad to think that in 1978 when I was 11 years old that that was the best year of my life......... thank god it wasn't lol

I spose we all have those moments when we would just like to give up responsibility and be a kid again, but to have to deal with adults as a child? no thanks.

can't really remember the rats at that age...... but then I don't have a good memory of these things..... they obviously weren't at the forefront of my mind at that age or I would remember. I was more an ABBA fan. I used to get into my mums albums. one of my first albums that I owned myself was parallel lines by Blondie.... never had a rats album til a few years ago lol.

in fact I never watched much of Geldof at all on tv or listened to btr music til more recently...... it was the charity aspect for Africa that really caught my attention and then as I got older I couldn't help but feel something for bob..... I cant explain it.... I just felt a connection..... and then years later I was more and more drawn to him as a person, an individual...... and then I went through a spell of pouring over songs and bands that were around when I was a young teenager and there my enjoyment of the rats sprung from.

I still find all that Africa fundraising an inspiration.... what one man can do... the impact one human being can have...... it was mighty.....

it does sadden me that some people are not so anamoured by Geldof...... i'm known amongst my friends and work colleagues as a Geldof fan...... and so occasionaly wind up in chats about him..... I don't really understand how people think Geldof deserves any criticism IN COMPARISON to the rest of the plastic smiley celebs.... who ARE pretty spineless imo...... sorry, but when u see what one man can do one wonders why the others don't too, imagine what could get done! but I mean it takes a certain type of person to do it on such a scale and with some impact.... and Geldof drove with passion.... it was his passion I loved. the momentum was there at least. but we're not all leaders in the natural sense that he can obviously be.... so I empathise with plasticated celebs I guess really......

let me just say though that Brand, as in Russell is my most awesome fave celeb atm - even If I don't entirely agree with him....... here's a big revolutionary kiss from me Russell X

I absolutely cannot abide Russell Brand. Nothing to do with the 'dining out for 30 years' spat, just think he is totally unfunny and disrespectful.

I share your views on Geldof though! And I share Geldof's views on him.

well brand to me was one of these very popular successful comedians of the moment, and that, for me, is usually good enough reason for me to switch off the tv haha

but he spoke with strong convictions in the paxman interview and i was pretty taken aback and have since seen some of his quotes flying about fb, as you do lol, and thought to myself, yes, about bloody time SOMEBODY stepped out of the middle class status quo on the box and said something more than android-like dialect like the queen does. too afraid to upset the status quo by biting the hand that feeds them.

they are all turning into the queen. boring robots devoid of personality.

who are the real people behind the boring crap tv personas??

sure they think, and many do stuff for charities which i wholely respect of course (although i do like to rant and say derogatory things about celebs in haste when the mood so grabs me, but perhaps thats to do more with my hang ups about the world at large)

but to even mention POLITICS and especially to appear even SLIGHTLY to the 'left' of the spectrum is, it seems, totally TABOO Thing to do, they avoid it like the plague......

it appears that walking on hot coal is prefereable than to go around spouting this and that about revolution etc.

good on brand for being a bit different :)

anyway, what should one do when in touch with the loaded and famous, loaded yourself, with passion, influence and born with amazing leadership qualities?

it seems its one of two things:

go into politics and bomb innocent civilians

or

get to be a celeb and lavish in all your millions of pounds

its quite sad dont you think?

The public gets what the public wants (Going Underground), little has changed.

We live in more interesting times where people don't have to use conventional means of getting their message out to a bigger audience.  The problem is making yourself heard above all the noise, and the disappointment is that the trivial is uppermost if you can judge public opinion from trending.

A few have been exposed as theives, murderers and paedophiles. Maybe best to not know.

I don't buy celebrity magazines, nor watch much TV beyond football, the odd comedy like Fresh Meat and HBO series like Mad Men and Boardwalk Empire.   If I get the spare time, I watch a movie.  I confess to having Come Dancing and Who Wants To Be A Celebrity? (sic) on the TV,  but that's mainly because they are a couple of shows everyone in the houses watches.  Well, except me, I just surf the net when they are on.

I suppose the best advice is Why Don't You Just Switch Off Your Television Set and Go and Do Something Less Boring Instead? smile  (The irony is if anyone took that advice they'd have no audience!)

There is plenty of other more interesting stuff on our TVs to watch without watching the so called celebrity rubbish.

What is interesting on TV?  [that could come across as aggresive, but it is a genuine question, would like to find something interesting]

The only new programme I watch is Fresh Meat, other than that I only choose to watch football.   I got a Now TV box a while ago so we could watch movies as there was nothing on.  Also I get the HBO box sets, but all I have in the pipeline is Boardwalk Empire. Fully up to date with Game of Thrones and Mad Men.  I think I might have to "discover" Dexter and House and return to The Killing and The Wire.  Saturday nights aren't the same without Harry Hill's TV Burp.  It was the only way I knew of anything else on TV.

So for someone who doesn't watch soaps, chat shows, cooking shows, property porn,  celeb shows or "reality" shows, what is there?   err, nothing!

What about all the stations like the History Channel and National Geographic and the documentary channels? There are lots of good stations that deal with factual matters, education ,history, crime and investigation channels, Discovery Channel?

Ok mainstream tv is not that great. Irish tv is complete rubbish most of the time. I like listening to the radio a  lot, and reading and watching dvd's so am not too bothered about tv.Most of it is just junk, and there is nothing more annoying that watching advertisements on tv-something I studiously avoid , let me ad.smile

BBC4 has some excellent material on it, but brings itself down by repeating programmes several times during the evening and for a few days. You realise that there are only actually 2 programmes to watch.

Agree lots of interesting documentaries, amongst the rubbish.

I don't get many of those channels.  I used to watch Sky Arts, but since I downgraded to the basic package, mainly to stop the kids watching a whole load of cr@p, I don't even have that now.

ho ho.  Fortunately I have V+ and the various catch up players so rarely watch ads unless I happen be watching live, which is rare.
