Stone Roses - Are they that popular or are people trying to make a quick buck?

I'm a bit surprised that they can sell out four dates at the Ethiad. But evidently that's just what has happened.Seems a long time ago now when my brother was coming home for the weekend, from Limerick Art College, in the late eighties with a Stone Roses tape on his Sony Walkman, and sharing it with me for the first time.

To be honest you can stuff all the big stadium gigs.Most of the bands I really like can sell only a few thousand tickets if they're lucky. There's a lot to be said for a certain 'intimacy' with the band in a smaller venue.

Hear hear! I can recall standing in Bar Cuba in Macclesfield in 2001, and Bob stopping, requiring assistance to the words to 'Dave' which I merely spoke at normal vocal level, standing as he was just a few feet in front of me on a rather cramped stage.

Think it's back to the old debate about style over substance and as much about saying 'I was there' as expecting a top gig.

I absolutely loved that first album and still rate it one of my top 3 or so (my charts change as much as the real ones nowadays), yet strangely the only time I saw them, at same Finsbury Park gig a couple of summers back, I felt a bit flat. Maybe I expected too much. Didn't help I was about 100 yards from stage. Also getting more and more anti stadium gigs as I get older, and wasn't a fan at best of times.

In summary, not convinced their live act warrants the sales or the hype, but the mythical status of 89-90 and lack of follow up for years puts them cult category.

That said, I wouldn't turn down a freebie if offered.

I wouldn't go to Manchester to see them, but would see them in London, unless they play Hyde Park as I don't want to be half a mile from the stage. Stadium/field gigs are OK as long as they don't have the Golden Circle.

That's ringing bells. No wonder Stone Roses seemed flat...hard act to follow that. Rats in a pub garden

Well I thought The Stone Roses were superb that night at Finsbury Park. Was a good day out with Johnny Marr, PiL and Myles Kane, although we only caught the end of his set.

If enough people thought that, and spread the word, then I suppose question about popularity is covered. I still think it's a 'cool' band to like though, even more than U2 wink , and something the Rats never did (well for a year or two maybe) manage and now never will.

Not knocking anyone with that comment about U2 or Stone Roses, just saying for every proper fan there are probably 2 or 3 more there who think it's the done thing and something 'cred' to post on Facebook etc etc

Not sure I am a proper fan of most acts I see. Mostly, I only know the hits and maybe the odd album track.

The Stone Roses phenomena is a bit puzzling, especially those who claim to have "seen" them back in the day. I never remember them playing at all unlike Happy Mondays, so I never saw them. And they only have one album, the second can be disregarded.

Looking at their gig history they only played three biggish gigs in England in 1989 and 1990 (Blackpool, Spike Island and Alexandra Palace). Even when they returned in 1995, they played the likes of the Cambridge Corn Exchange.

I believe The Stone Roses are finally going to headline Glastonbury, 21 years after they had to withdraw from the headline slot.

I see Stone Roses have announced another date in Dublin at Marlay Park. That's Rats territory! (Not far from Dun Laoghaire)

PS Whenever I type Dun Laoghaire I do it in time to the song!
