I thought I would share with you a couple of quotes from the book "Blue Shoes and Happiness" by Alexander McCall Smith. The latest in the series about Precious Mamotswe, the only lady detective in Botswana. In one scene she is reading through a western magazine, looking at the pictures.

"She had her strong likes and dislikes. She liked Bishop Tutu and that man with the untidy hair who sang to help the hungry"

A true, but simple description, isn't it. Maybe that should be his epitaph. I wonder if that is how ordinary Africans see him?

In another chapter, Precious has just spoken with an elderly American lady who has come to see Africa again one last time before she dies. She turns away with tears in her eyes, thinking

"if only more people knew, if only more people knew that there was more to Africa than all the problems they saw. They could love us too, as we love them"

How true. We tend to see the problems first.

An amusing article from today's Scotland on Sunday about Alexander McCall Smith's unusual friendship with "Mr Flea" of the Red Hot Chilli Peppers.

"Blue Shoes" has been on our Washington DC area bestseller list for 2 weeks but I hadn't read it...guess I will NOW! thanks to your postings!!

The lady who wrote the Bridget Jones books also wrote one a few years back about a fundraising concert in Africa, like LiveAid, called "Cause Celebre."

That would be 'Cause Celeb' by Helen Fielding.

It's been a while since I read the book, but I think it was a fashion show she organised (I mean the main character). I won't go into any detail about the storyline in case anyone wants to read it. Bob gets a mention, when she gets dispondent she chivvies herself along by saying 'think of Geldof'. It's a good book, but that is definitely the highlight!!
