This article is about Bono, but Bob talks about Bono and how different their approaches are to their campaigning:

I read that too and wondered if I was the "embrace" kind of person or the "punching" one.

This is how Bob is quoted in the article:

" "Bono's in love with the world," said his fellow campaigner Bob Geldof. "He wants to embrace it. I want to punch its lights out." The technique has made the front man of the biggest rock band in the world one of its most successful political lobbyists for change."

I'd say I sympathize with Bono, I usually want to embrace the world... Whatever Bob means with "punching its lights out"!

"Punching [its] lights out" is generally slang for punching a person in the face.

There was a documentary on the US Public Television Stations about Protest Music over the last 40 years and in that documentary Bob was interviewed and he basically said that exact same quote (which is probably why they work so well together in meeting leaders, they sort of balance each other out).

take care,

At Glasgow, Bob talked a bit about his friend and the differences between them. He says that at meetings, even with Presidents and Prime Ministers he (Bob) regularly just loses it completely, but Bono stays calm and quotes the Bible at them if necessary. He finds his religious beliefs a great strength at times like that. We have all heard from Bono about trying to stop Bob poking Tony Blair's eye out. They must dread having to meet him sometimes.
