Bob Geldof heads a list of high-profile campaigners against world poverty being honoured by Newcastle University early in the New Year.

Bob Geldof, who received a Knighthood in 1986, will be joined by His Excellency Benjamin William Mpaka, former President of the United Republic of Tanzania; Susan George, political economist and author of a dozen books on hunger, debt, international institutions and North-South issues; and Dr David Golding, Development Co-ordinator of Make Poverty History North East.

The four will receive Honorary Doctor of Civil Law degrees from the Chancellor of Newcastle University, the Right Honourable Lord Patten of Barnes CH, during a special ceremony to celebrate the achievements of the anti-poverty movement, Make Poverty History. The ceremony will be held at The Sage Gateshead on Monday 8 January 2007, beginning at 2.00 pm.

The University's Vice-Chancellor, Professor Christopher Edwards, said: 'Newcastle University was the first higher education institution in the world formally to pledge its support for the Jubilee Debt Campaign, and staff and students have backed the Make Poverty History Campaign. Earlier this year, the University gained Fairtrade status for its commitment to supporting ethical trading.

'By honouring these individuals, we are recognising their dedication to eradicating debt and hunger in the developing world – aims which we as an institution share and applaud', he added.

Immediately after the ceremony, an audience of invited guests and members of the public will have the opportunity to take part in a debate on the theme of world poverty, with the panel of honorary graduates, chaired by Lord Patten.
