Daltrey said that unlike the original Live Aid in 1985, where the money went directly to famine relief, its successor had no realistic aims. "What did we really achieve at Live 8? he asked. We got loads of platitudes and no action.
I find this quite interesting. Geldof himself more or less admitted in his interview with Mariella Frostrup that Live 8 didn't work out as planned. It raised the issue of poverty yet it has not put it on the political agenda nor mobilised anyone. The attitude of some of the artists who appeared to want to be elsewhere playing for dough didn't help, as potential headliners all went on early. Ultimately it seems that all Live 8 did was give some publicity to the acts that appeared and increase their public profile (though whether or not Pete Doherty needs it is questionable).
Ironically enough in these days of globalisation, an event like Live 8 became yesterday's news very rapidly whereas Live Aid didn't. Two years on, and it has all been forgotten by most people. Live 8's website doesn't have any news/actions for 2007 and the G8 is imminent.
It will be interesting to see what happens in London this weekend. tp://www.yourvoiceagainstpoverty.org.uk/ I suspect it will be less attended than the day Geldof told kids to bunk off in Edinburgh. Mind you, an estimated 200,000 attended that http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Live_8
