I've got tickets for Elvis Costello in May - never saw them before but have read some good reviews. Went to see Anastacia on Saturday at MEN stadium, Not my kind of gig - i just don't like cabaret, costume changes! and trapeze artists. I'm more into intimate venues and spontaneity. When the shirt looks like it was been washed out the night before in the hotel sink! and every word between songs hasn't been meticulously scripted.

My next gig is Bloc Party @ Brixton in October!!! Can't believe I got tickets 8 months in advance. A lot of bands I'd like to see, but I'm too old (ahem, 40+) and my wife won't let me go!

My last was Franz Ferdinand back in May last year, just before our second child arrived. And dare I say it, quite possibly the best ever! (and I've seen hundreds)

On impulse, I saw Sting last night. He's so beautiful to watch when he plays.

I ended up with Madison Square Garden tickets for U2 on May 21. The hottest tickets in the USA, even if mine are crap seats. I'm beginning to worry that I may, in the heat of the moment, become the crazed fan who starts screaming (alternately) "Edge, I love you" and "Adam, I love you" at inappropriate moments during the show. We shall see. (Hopefully my seats are too far away to lead to such an embarrassing incident.)

Oh, Rita. We SO have to talk! Three words: OH MY GOD!!!! Really, the only thing left on my to do list is singing backup/harmony with Edge and having a beer with Larry. Well, I guess I could come up with more if I thought about it long enough... A few hours of sleep and then I do it all again.

The video guys are crap though. The camerawork was really sloppy in a lot of places. They should fire this bunch and get a new crew. Funny, I know someone who feels like running away and joining the circus....:)

Edited to add: Gave away my ticket for tonight (well, last night, as I'm writing this during an insomnia attack after having gone to bed at 8:30pm). I got 3 hours of sleep in the overnight between Tues/Wed, and it turns out that a location shoot I'm working on was moved from Fri to Thurs, with a call time of 6:30 am, which means I have to be up at 4am. I felt that if I went two back to back nights on little or no sleep, I'd blow the shoot.

So I sold my ticket (face) to a very deserving person, who screamed with joy in the predictable way. No need to physically push myself that hard out of greed, 'tis better to spread the love. After all, I'm still going to MSG on Sat. Even if they DID do Gloria and Bad tonight.....(AAARGH!!!! That HURTS!!!!). OK - back to sleep. Nitey nite.

My next "gig" is going to be a festival, the Berlin05 festival (taking place, not very surprising, here in Berlin ), next weekend. The line-up is mostly German: the established and very cool Fantastische Vier; as well as some young bands, among them Tocotronic (from my hometown Hamburg), StereoTotal, Kante, and the brilliant Klee.

You probably won't have heard of any of them, but you may have heard of the special guest, Sir Bob Geldof... He's still listed in the "bands" section but is rather going to promote the ideas of Live 8. I still haven't given up hope though that he may bring his guitar though...

What the hey...I thought I'd resurrect this thread.

In the past few weeks I've seen....Catherine Russell (a friend of mine with a debut CD), Mark Erelli, Shawn Mullins (I'm now a fan for life, that show was AWESOME), John Vanderslice, seeing John Pizzarelli tonight.

Upcoming ... just got tickets for Mark Knopfler/Emmylou Harris at Radio City Music Hall (4th row, but all the way on the side) and Tom Petty & The Heartbreakers at MSG (10th row pretty much center - WOO HOO) http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ABPrv1NJFPk

Probably other stuff to come, still deciding.

Edited to add: Quickie reviews - Cat was really good, I was very proud of her. Mark Erelli was a bit too earnest, but still interesting. Shawn Mullins, as stated above, kicked some major ass and created a fan for life. John Vanderslice was better on CD than live, but this saved the show for me: At one point the band had an extended jam that was utterly amazing. That made the evening worth it. John Pizzarelli was fab as usual, his in-between-song remarks are now verging on being a comedy show in themselves. The multitalented JP. Not to mention that his teenage son emceed the evening (a benefit for the school John P., Jr. attends). Jr. was very sweet. Were we ever really that young?

Edited to add: Edwin = mediocre. Mostly, I wondered what time it was and how many tunes were left to go. Hoped I'd be shocked with a moment of musical transcendence, but it was not to be. Not much fun was had. Of course, the rest of the crowd loved it. Was in front of some horribly drunk guy who screamed "Mr. McCain is in da house!" repeatedly, at the top of his lungs.

I can now add Geldof in Italy to my list of upcoming gigs. And said with an enormous grin on my face. He's playing at the Roman baths theatre, so the atmosphere and setting are going to be incredible. How excited am I?

In the toss up between my works summer do - free meal/drinks ona boat trip, Bob did unfortunately win! Shame about the boat trip but I can do that next year

I've seen Jason Mraz twice this year; once in Manchester in March and once in Belfast earlier this month. Very, very clever with the lyrics is that one. And he's got this really cool percussionist/backing vocalist called Toca.

Franna, have you got Bruce Springsteen's latest album? I've been sorely tempted to buy it. I keep lifting it from the shelf in HMV, studying the cover, then talking myself out of buying it. But maybe I should?

I had a rare outing to London last weekend and saw Tom Stoppard's new play "Rock'n'Roll" at the Royal Court Theatre. Not exactly a gig but lots of good music. (Stoppard obviously has a big thing for Pink Floyd and The Rolling Stones!) I came out of it intellectually stretched and filled with re-newed enthusiasm for live theatre! The leads (Brian Cox, Sinead Cusack and Rufus Sewell) were excellent. Recommended!

Jules, that sounds like a wonderful concert.

I saw a 2 local Minnesota bands June 1 (hey I thought that 3 weeks ago!) at a resturant called The Solara.

The Owls and Romantica played. Here is what I posted in my MySpace blog (which I seldom use):

I won tickets to a show at the Solera in Minneapolis, so my sister Dawn and I went and saw a couple of local bands. These bands were new to me, so I'm going to describe them as best as possible.

It was a very fun, entertaining evening. The Solera is usually a resturant, with several bar areas and event rooms. [I also found out that they show movies on their rooftop some evenings too--which would be fun to check out sometime.] They have been hosting bands every other Thursday the months of May and June. It was a very nice place to see some live music. They had the bands in a room on the 2nd floor; this room had many windows and each window had a light voltive candle. As night closed in, the candle light in the red candle holders really set the mood as fun and sophisticated.

Solera is a place that serves drinks, but if you are not a drinker it isn't an uncomfortable enviroment. Everything is fun, relaxed and it seemed like most of the people present knew each other or someone in one of the bands.

Ms. Dawn and I arrived at about 8:15pm; we thought we were late. Turned out we were not and the first band came on about 15 minutes later. Both bands taped their performances for later videos.

The Owls played for about 45 minutes. This was a very unique band of 2 men and 2 women, 3 of them are friends who have played together since they were 19 (which was some years ago). These two couples had a very interesting, vintage look to their clothes and (at least to me) looked like they would be fun people to know. The microphones were giving some trouble, so it was hard to catch most of their lyrics. The first song was done to the tune of "Sweet Jane", so that was pretty fun. The most unique thing about The Owls is that they continually switched instruments. After each song, at least 2 of them would switch what they're playing; many times 3 would switch around, and at one point all 4 switched instuments, as the drummer went and played a guitar.

There was short break and then Romantica played their songs. Romantica was fantastic. Their songs are very well written, interesting music and lyrics. They include a violin within their arrangements (and Jessy plays it beautifully). The whole band really seems to enjoy playing together.

All the songs were written by the lead singer and guitarist Ben Kyle. The lyrics have a definite voice, which makes them interesting and enjoyable. Ms. Dawn kept turning to me while they were playing and said "They are good." [I think she wasn't expecting to enjoy herself as she did.] I ended up buying Romantica's CD (but I should have bought 2 - it is Dawn's birthday next week).

Since I'm so poor at describing music, please check out Romantica's MySpace page and you can hear 3 or 4 of their songs. I really liked "On My Mind", "Oscar Wilde" and "Honey", but I think will more time to listen to the CD in the next couple of weeks, I'll probably be recommended the whole CD (which is called "it's your weakness that I want").

We left the Cities a little after 11pm and I didn't get home until 2am. [It should have taken 2 hours - but let's just say my sister and I need to work on comm./navigation and I need to eat supper before driving!] It was a tiring day at work today - but overall very well worth it.

Anyways, I hope my little review will make everyone go and explore your local music scene. There are many people out willing to share a little bit of their energy and creativity with the rest of us. Go out and see what is there. You may be pleasantly surprised. [Or if you don't enjoy it, go and find another band until you find something you like! You may be able to get a story or two out of the whole experience.]

I don't think I'd ever buy tickets off Ebay. If a gig is cancelled you have no comeback & the person you bought tickets off would get a refund if purchased by credit card on-line of by telephone. Its only if tickets are bought in shops that have to be returned so therefore the person selling them on Ebay makes a fortune, 1st when they charge disgusting prices & then a refund if the gig is cancelled. I've been lucky enough to get tickets to the likes of U2. Last time was through the members pre-sale but before it was just through constant ringing & eventually getting through. If the need ever arises I'd just do the old fashioned que. I'm giving Razorlight a miss this time as I've a few gigs coming up & I'm moving house so have to watch the cashflow.

Razorlight tickets were up for sale on eBay within minutes of the opening of the pre-sale. I imagine there must be people out there who do this type of thing for a living. It's not good for the genuine fan.

Last night it was Razorlight at the Waterfront Hall in Belfast. A sell out, you couldn't have jammed a sardine into the standing area, so tightly packed it was.

A band called Director was the support and I thought they were quite good. The lead singer had a really distinctive voice. Don't know where they came from but they were a solid opener.

Razorlight opened their set about 9:30pm with a really rousing "In The Morning" and continued at break-neck pace, taking us through all their hits plus much of the stuff on the latest album. It was loud, high energy stuff. Johnny Borrell shed his scrap of a white vest early on and strutted about like a young Mick Jagger in miniscule white jeans that he had to hitch up frequently. He even climbed a stack of speakers at one point. I was always mystified at the comparisons to Jagger before, seeing him more like the young Geldof who he sounds very similar to, but now I can see where the critics are coming from. No doubt about it, the boy has great stage presence, though he didn't engage in any chit-chat at all with the audience (unlike Geldof).

We were really surprised when they left the stage at 10:20!!! I thought we might get a lengthy encore but no...........it was only two songs long, closing with "America".

So overall? Very good, what there was of it! My previous shortest gig was seeing The Thrills at the Ulster Hall several years ago who were on stage for 75 minutes, but I think Razorlight barely got in 60 minutes. At least The Thrills had the excuse that they'd only released one album at that point in time!

But then again maybe gigs are getting shorter? I don't go to that many!

Well, well. Next weekend I'm off to Butlins for a 70s theme weekend. We are seeing T-Rextasy, Slade, a Tribute to Mott the Hoople and others. All look good - well except from Showaddywaddy. Pity the Boomtown Rats won't be there huh!

Ok that was short. Yes, quality is important but Razorlight could do better than that. The shortest concert I was ever at was The Stereophonics in Dublin Castle at 45 minutes. I wasn't amused..
I was at The Killers last week. The concert was about an hour & 15 minutes. They sounded excellent but sang 2 songs twice & some in the same order as the CD which I found rather irritating as I'd OD listening to the CDs before the gig. If I closed my eyes it would have been like I was just listening to the CD. Also the crowd was all teenagers who were off their faces. At 28 I felt old! The gig was good but not as good as I would expect..

Wow, I just brought the tickets for the Rolling Stones Concert in Budapest!!!!!!!

I can't wait. It will be on the 20th of July. And next year maybe there will be a U2 concert.

I saw the Stones in Amsterdam last year. You won't be disappointed, they put on a superb show. And I don't know where Jagger gets the energy from at his age to dance around the stage like he does.

I don't think U2 will be doing gigs for a bit as they've fairly recently finished a world tour, might be 3 or so years before they do it again - they tend to leave big gaps. I think more so now as they are getting older. biggrin

I hope they don't leave it too long, I'd like to see them again soon.

Managed to get tickets for The Proclaimers for Edinburgh in November. They only went on sale yesterday and all I could get was the front row of the balcony. This is in a 3000 people venue. Really looking forward to it.

My God The Rats are gonna have a busy December! Wish they would come to Dublin....... blankstare

Was interesting reading back over this topic. It has been a great year of gigs for me this year. Saw Def Leppard, Whitesnake Journey & Telsa June 12th, Take That June 13th. Bruce Springsteen July 11th, Leonard Cohen July 23rd, U2 July 25th, Brendan Keeley Aug 21st and November 20th. Jimmy McCarthy September 25th, Greenday Oct 21st, Fleetwood Mac Oct 25th and David Kitt November 21st. I like to keep busy! My final gig of this year is Paul McCartney December 20th. Also packed in a few MJ tribute shows and a weekend music show so all in all a great year of live music. smile

Already booked for next year is The Coronas January 8th, Bryan Adams solo acoustic tour January 14th, the Queen musical, We Will Rock You January 31st and Whitney Houston April 18th. Am planning on booking Paul Brady tickets this week too and living in hope that Bon Jovi will cross the water and play a few dates at our O2 as well as their London gigs. biggrin

I have "only" been to two Simple Minds concerts this year.After Bob they are my favourit band so I am well happy.
I have seen Robbie Williams,U2,REM,Roxy Music,Simple Minds + more the last few years but I am still waiting to see Bob again.

ps The Queen show is really good.

I saw the Simple Minds when they supported Bryan Adams a few years ago and while I like their music I found Jim Kerr a bit sleazy. However I saw him in interview earlier this year and found him really down to earth so my opinion has improved.

I think the Rats have to play Dublin. A nice big venue like Croke Park.

But seriously, I believe there would probably be more interest in a gig in Dublin and they could play a decent sized venue.

Though I would liked to have seen The Boss and the wonderful Leonard Cohen, the tickets were eye wateringly expensive. So I just bought the Essential albums for a fiver each and watched their concerts on TV.

It looks like I will go through 2009 having seen no gigs whatsoever, my last was the Rats at the 100 club last year.

Leonard was very expensive but so so worth it! Brucie wasn't that expensive considering the prices we Irish are used to paying. I spend a fortune on gigs but they are my life and I could not imagine a WHOLE year without them. A few weeks and I get withdrawal symptoms!!!

My final gig of the year and indeed decade was one of the best of my life. Paul McCartney live is amazing and lived up to every expectation I had and much more besides.

Funnily enough McCartney was my first gig ever (with Wings). Back in 1978 on Back to Egg tour. We got guest passes thanks to my uncle who worked at Wembley Arena and ended up at the back stage party. My dad was a bit star struck as he knew some of the people back stage like Kenny Lynch and others, but as I was 14 and my sister only 13 we didn't have a clue, so just hung out drinking wine! I remember the guitarist getting off with a couple of fit looking women as well. I always knew I should have practised more

McCartney himself didn't turn up. Too good for us!

One a month! I'm lucky to do one concert a year. The ones I can think of are..

So far this year, have managed to see the Ukulele Orchestra of Great Britain in Jan 2011 (yes really), the Counterfeit Stones (hastily arranged as a substitute for cancelled Rats gig in March!), Australian Pink Floyd (Mar 2011 - wow 2 in a month, nearly rivalling Suss!!). And coming up, the Rats (cue drum roll!) in July, and then the Enid (ok, not really my choice, but it's a night out I guess) in Sep I think, plus the UOGB again in Sept (another 2 in a month!)

Getting slightly easier as kids get older to brainwash/bribe them into liking music that we can all go to - the last year of playing Rats CD every time they get in the car is really playing dividends!

Though more difficult to find a Rats gig thats easy to travel to, ie not in Germany in school term time ....

Have to confess I bought the tickets, but in my defence it's only because I'm deserting wife on 10/7 for Rats, on her birthday (cue the onslaught of abuse from female forum members, and prob some male).
Played 'Could it be Magic' at a gig last weekend as it happens. Went down a storm, but then it was a junior football club thing so with loads of 30-45 year old mums there was a fairly safe bet.
I actually went to Circus tour at Wembley as well. Would rather see Take That than Westlife or Boyzone or Wanted or JLS etc etc.
Should this be in the guilty pleasures thread?

This has being a great year for concerts for me. Starting the last week in April it has being crazy with me already seeing Paul Brady, Eric Clapton, Roger Waters, Kings of Leon and others at Slane, Judy Collins, Take That and Paul Simon. The last 3 have been in the last week and it doesn't end here! Heading to Bryan Adams tonight, Bon Jovi next week and Janet Jackson and Christy Moore the following week. Then I have a drought as I've nothing else planned. However as soon as the tickets go on sale I am booking one for Bob in Manchester! One would never guess I love live music, would they biggrin

One thing that puts me off live music is the danger to hearing. Normally I wear ear plugs which is probably what most people do, but still end up with days of ringing in my ears. Must admit haven't been going to many gigs in the last five years. Have low level tinnitus in my ears , the price you pay for all that loud music.

Last gigs I went to were Love (Arthur Lees legendary band) on two occasions. Saw Geldof in Vicar Street, Dublin and Echo and the Bunnymen in Dublin, also Ian Mccullough the Bunnymen singer when he played solo in Dublin.

Last indie gigs was The Cooper Temple Clause about five years ago as well as The Wonderstuff and Inspiral Carpets around the same time.

I'm hoping the Pulp gig blasts the blockage out of my left ear! I have never had tinnitus apart from just after a gig. Soon goes.

Yeah, there were loads of people with ear plugs yesterday. Very sensible. However, outdoor gigs never seem to affect me that much, I guess a lot of the sound just goes up and out. Whereas when the Rats played the 100 Club and Whyteleafe, I really felt blasted afterwards. Maybe their amps just go up to 11.

And now Pulp have a midweek gig in August... Maybe The Rats can do the 100 Club again.

This years Wireless Festival also had a noticeably quieter output than previous years. ... . The audience's banter was noticeably louder than the band themselves.

You may have less need to worry about your ears in the future. I have to admit the loudest gig I have been to in recent years was The Rats at 100 Club. Maybe it was a small venue and the amps were cranked up to 11, but it was at the limit. I did notice it was quieter than usual at Wireless as I could hear others singing. And I didn't have any after effects whatsoever despite 6 hours of listening.

My hearing has improved greatly since I stopped listening to music on headphones. Up to a year ago I listened to music on headphones at too loud a volume and that caused the tunnitus more than the occasional concert I went to. It really was a case if either stop listening to music on headphones or take the consequences of reduced hearing and constant ringing in my ears.

I now find that other peoples headphones can sound very loud, or the music on speakers in shops or nightclubs can seem really loud- meaning that the generally young people listening at this volume are doing slow, gradual damage to their hearing. Sometimes I pass a pub with a rock band playing at, it seems, excessive volume, as this is from outside the venue- what it's doing to the hearing of the customers is another story?

As regards the Rats being loud noticed that when Boomtown Rats played at the Music Machine in 1977 on the DVD Garry Roberts went under the stage name Max Volume.

There must be lots of people in bands and the music scene in general with damaged hearing-can't see how it could be otherwise.

After Penn gig, Simon showed us some ear plug bits he uses - not sure exactly how they work, as I guess you want to hear some of whats going on around you! But obviously they stop you deafening yourself by banging drums too loudly for example .... Have to admit my hearing was a bit muffled after the weekend festival, and felt a little guilty that I had made my 2 children stand right at the front during the Rats - but it's not as if it happens every day! That is sooo funny! I do the same thing! I have this old BTR concert tee that I think is a kids size T, but I manage to wear it OK. It is really faded and needs to be tossed, but... I never get by without a few compliments and discussions on BG when I wear that T. I also have a few pins of the BTR that I wear on jackets that someone says something to me about BG.

Also, I received a note on my Miata at the Atlanta airport last week. It read; Why don't I like Mondays? BG. That had never happened to me before. On my license plate I have BOB GELDOF ROCKS MY WORLD. It's nice to know someone shares my appreciation for the man in Georgia! Too much. (OR, maybe Bob Geldog himself cruised through the airport and saw my car? NAWWWWWW! NOT!

Regarding concerts; we went to see U2 last year and they were excellant. We plan to see Sheryl Crow & Kid Rock this year.

According to the NME Barton is a big indie/alternative music fan. Wonder has he heard or would he appreciate Joey's On The Street Again?

The two gigs with the Rats I have seen have been the loudest I have been to in years. I suspect a lot of that is the small venues and been too close to the band. I'm sure concerts are quieter now than back in the late seventies. Back then my ears would buzz all night, yet now I am unaffected.

Possibly in the future we will be able to grow new ears, or at least repair the nerve damage with stem cells, but that's a long way down the line.

I think its important to look after hearing so that one can continue to enjoy music. Sensitive, undamaged ears pick up more of the subtlety of music.If your hearing has taken a pummelliing over the years then naturally you cannot hear the same frequency ranges as someone who has not damaged their hearing.

Beethoven famously lost about sixty percent of his hearing half way through his career.

Oh and now Coldplay in December, luckily I got a couple of tickets on the pre-sale. Back on sale tomorrow (Friday) at 9.30am. And it's the most I have ever paid for a pair of tickets. Over £107!! (£53.50 each)

Saw Glenn Tilbrook last night - a very good gig, despite him and other band members sporting beards which threw me at first as he looked so different, but at least it wasn't in the ZZ Top style!! Good to hear some old Squeeze favourites as well as some new ones. His humour and good nature came across well - and there was a classic moment when they did a song apparently in the style of X Factor - very funny to see them all miming especially the drummer!! Anyway a good evening - not even marred when some guy barged into me and dropped his beer glass which smashed everywhere. Fortunately no injuries - and at least it wasn't my beer that got spilt!!
