So much has been written about Paula Yates… luckily(?) not so much here. Nonetheless, as this forum section is here, I would like to say that I enjoyed reading Paula Yates’ books a lot!
Needless to say that as an ardent Geldof fan, there was no way round getting Paula’s books too. Out of the ten or fifteen she wrote, I have "Rockstars in their underpants" as well as "Sex with Paula Yates", "Village People" and "The fun starts here". The notorious "Rockstars in their underpants" (which must have been a really funny project to collect all those pics!) contains some forty or fifty photos of bands and artists famous in 1980 in their underwear. About half the photos were taken by Paula herself. My favourite one is the one of Debbie Harry having fallen over on stage, and one of David Bowie in a knitted outfit(!) and with dirty feet. "Underpants" also contains an introduction and comments to the photos written by Paula, all of which are hilarious. Example: Martin Chambers of The Pretenders. "Martin’s unusual stripy underpants show that he has that certain something when it comes to picking out a pair of pants. I think they look a little like the sort of thing bands end up buying when they’re on tour and have three hours in Glasgow with nothing to do except buy thistle-shaped barometers and tam o’ shanters with purple pom-poms on the top. Although you can’t see them in the picture because the room was so small I couldn’t get far enough away to get his feet in the shot, Martin is wearing matching socks making a charming little twin set."
"Sex with Paula Yates" answers questions like "Can I get pregnant with my pants on?". It's subtitled "The book of the tv series" – I don’t know which series that was, in any case it must have been a good one! When I first read this book, I found it extremely funny. Paula was a very talented writer, with a sharp style and lots of wit. I haven’t picked this book up for some time but I guess I’d still find it hilarious.
"Village People" is about the joy of English country life – colourful, funny and possibly in some aspects quite like it really was to live in the old priory in Faversham, Kent.
"The fun starts here" is "a practical guide to the bliss of babies", also a very personal book it seems. This one is my favourite, I’ve read it many times and also given it as a gift to friends who were expecting children.
I just discovered there was a sequel, "The fun don’t stop", again written for parents with small children. I'll try and get that too!
From the pictures I've seen of her...she looks to have been a very good Mommy...
(...I make that judgement based on how tidily the children are always dressed for travelling in the pictures...they look to have been kept close to her side also...)
