As a fan growing up I used to feel a bit insulted that the Rats were not considered "real " punks whatever that means. Then I started to realise that this was only a concept made up by the music press to suit their agenda which is being the arbiters of taste.
Bands like XTC, Dr Feelgood or The Saints were not strictly punk either but their attitude was the most important thing rather than wearing spiked hair and drinking cider for breakfast.
The word punk must be the most overused word in the music industry- bandied about for all sorts of bands so that it has lost much of its meaning. The Rats settled for New Wave which again is another flag of convenience invented by the press.
In conclusion a rose by any other name would smell as sweet!
