Death Of Captain Beefheart- a Rats fans lament
Permalink

Last night the death was announced of Don Van Vliet aka Captain Beefheart one of the most revolutionary musicians of the sixties or any other decade.

His music was akin to the art of Salvador Dali or Picasso totally without rules and something pretty unique.

Hope some other Rats fans have heard some of his music - the best album probably is Trout Mask Replica as an introduction and also as his crowning achievement.

I know its off topic but Beefheart was a true genius in a world where that word is used too frequently.

Rest In Peace Don.

It's not so off topic Noel - according to Geldof's 'Is that It?' The Captain joined the Rats live on stage at the California Jam festival. I've never been able to find which song they played together but what a gig that must have been.

Agree that Trout Mask Replica is the Captain's masterpiece, but it's also the lp that is the most difficult so as a first introduction I'd suggest they check out Doc At The Radar Station which has a punky feel and really rocks

Wow I never knew that having lost my copy of Is That It? years ago. I wonder what did they play- interestingly two perhaps dominant personality types in charge of bands of excellent musicians.

Maybe there's a bootleg available somewhere, I'll have to check it out.

I think Trout Mask Replica has the more archetypal Beefheart sound but all the albums are very good though some people just don't get Captain Beefheartand the Magic Band. He may not be for everyone but anyone with an adventurous spirit should check him out.

Love the track Dirthy Blue Jean from Doc At The Radar Station. Beefheart was well as musician was also an excellent lyricist- seeing some of the lyrics written down  shows how good a command of the English language he had- a poet as well as a composer and also he painted in his latter years.

Matt Groening of The Simpsons is a huge Beefheart fan and always sings the praises of the Captain and The Magic Band.
