With nothing better to do on a Sunday{ except maybe watch Birmingham beat Arsenal ] I though I'd try to compile a list of famous characters in Boomtown Rats songs so in no particular order here goes.....

Adolf Hitler and Eva Braun
Charles Manson "Helter skelters free/ dont tell Mad Charlie that...
Dale Carnegie
Alexander solzhenitsyn
Howard Hughes
Mona Lisa
Ian Smith ex Rhodesian Prime Minister
The Pope - "and like that Pope I'D kiss the ground below....

So why not join in the "fun" and lets complete the list? There must be loads more.

Ok, assuming this is another one we have to do without recourse to lyrics, I can think of Barbara Cartland immediately. Magenta and Suzie were allegedly Magenta Devine and Suzie McKewan if memory serves me, although "famous" might be pushing it there. And would Shoeless Joe Jackson count for Up All Night?

Will keep thinking.

p.s. Didn't know Mad Charlie was aimed at Manson. The things you learn on here...

Charles Manson was listening to the Bealtes song Helter Skelter before the infamous Tate / La Bianca murders and he interpreted the lyrics as signifying a coming race war in his own warped way. Manson also wrote songs but couldn't get a recording contract and felt betrayed by people in the music business for letting him down. His most famous song is called Look At Your Game Girl which is quite good and uncanny, but his subsequent antics but the kibosh on his music only for the most curious.

Yeah Shoeless Joe Jackson who threw a World Series and let the kids down, hence a young kid says to Jackson "Say it ain't so Joe...." and the phrase enters popular culture. Any oblique references will do to famous people and well done for knowing that. I was going to bring that up a while back but though people wouldn't be that interested.

Of course it qualifies. Real or fictional they all count. Now I just remember Blake Of The Yard is Sir James Blake a fictional character of literature and film fame.

There's also JFK, John F kennedy from Lucky who didn't last too long.

Ex Tory MP Michael Heseltine is nicknamed Tarzan but I dount if Bob was thinking of him!

Think you're right on that one. I think Me And Howard Hughes is poetic licience and it fits the melody. Should punks care about correct grammar anyway!
