... but what are the chances of Johnny and Live Aid co-founder Bob joining them in the spotlight?

Ive got mixed feelings about that, said Garry. I think it might not be a bad thing to do, but on the other hand some fans might almost see it as a retrograde step. While were still alive I suppose anythings possible but I wouldnt hold my breath."

Interesting.  I'm not sure the new band could accomodate Geldof.  It is different enough to be fresh whereas if Geldof returned it would probably be less fun and  less accessible.  Also Geldof has moved on, and the music he makes nowadays has nothing in common with The Rats.

Having Fingers involved would be OK should he ever leave Japan.  That would be a great addition.  Would be hard to have Cott and Briquette as they have effectively been replaced and I can't see Pete and Darren simply standing to one side.

I'm happy with things as they stand, and think that a full re-union would be a disappointment rather than a triumph.

i think if the Rats were to reform with the original line up it would be for a handful of gigs rather then a permanent or semi permanent arrangement. In that scenario I doubt if Pete Barton or Darren Beale would object- no more than the Rats would object to Pete Barton playing with the Animals or some other band or Darren moonlighting in some other band.

The only thing a reunion achieves is some sort of closure- proving that the lads can get on stage as friends and for one last hurrah. They are getting older and they may never have the chance to play as a unit unless they take it soon. Of course they will not be the same band as in their heyday. I probably might be disappointed- on the other hand maybe not. I would have moderate expectations. Besides Geldof needs to get his teeth into some proper music - he might surprise us. Just not sure what set of circumstances would lead to a potential reunion or who the instigator would be. Anythings possible if the Queen can be welcomed in Ireland!

Seems the Rats got together after Gary had a vintage amp from the first album/Tonic days for  sale on Ebay [slightly sad] and Pete Barton the buyer, suggested getting a band together to play Boomtown Rats stuff with Simon Crowe. Also touching image of Gary playng the first few albums after many years- and describing the original breakup as being a form of post tramautic stress.

Have to agree, a reunion would probably need a driver such as, sad to say, a wake or failing that an offer no one would refuse from someone like JK Rowling (allegedly a fan) for her birthday party. Either way it would be a one-off in my view.

I just can't envisage a situation where they would do it for the fans or even for old time's sake, and suspect that whatever we all like to think the demand wouldn't be huge, which would be hard to take for them and us.

I also have grown to admire the current line up and feel a loyalty I didn't expect, so would be very disappointed if suggestion was Pete and Darren were suddenly surplus to requirements.

Finally, and I confess I've not listened to much of Bob's work, from what I have heard of Bob in recent years it's almost as if his voice has changed. Seems more nasal and Dylanesque to me. Could he still belt out Rats' lyrics?

Like Garry, mixed feelings on this one.
