Security is being stepped up on New York's underground railway network as city officials said they have received a "credible security threat".
Police chief Ray Kelly said patrols and searches were being stepped up, and he appealed to travellers to avoid using bags, briefcases and pushchairs.
Mayor Michael Bloomberg said the threat was the most specific yet, and was related to the next few days.
He urged people to remain vigilant and to report anything suspicious.
However, in Washington, Homeland Security Department spokesman Russ Knocke appeared to contradict the New York officials when he told the Associated Press news agency that "the intelligence community has concluded this information to be of doubtful credibility".
So, what happened? I heard no more about this. Perhaps they are waiting for Hallowe'en so they can really scare the people of NY. I know how much they like it.
Nothing happened. After a few days, it was decided (publicly) that the threat "had never been credible" and the added security diminished.
Depending on your worldview, it was simply a re-election campaign tactic by Mayor Bloomberg (by which I mean he always knew the threat was bogus but wanted to be seen as pro-active in keeping the city as protected as possible), or the local powers-that-be really did think there was an active, specific threat. I don't know, and don't really want to know.
Pushchairs are what adults push children around in. Oh that is so sick! To think that a suicide bomber would explode a baby like that! I'm sure it has been done somewhere in the world already, just can't think where is so depraved as to even think about it.
I hope they blow up lifesize dolls, not actual children. But, if they believe they're doing God's will, I bet they do martyr the child. How sad is that? *shudder*
As far as I know it is only police chief Ray Kelly who has thought about exploding babies in pushchairs. Nevertheless, I will prod every pushchair occupant next time I am in NYC.
I think I've heard about babies (or fake babies) in pushchairs/strollers being exploded in the mideast before. I don't think Ray Kelly came up with the idea.
I suggest you NOT go about prodding babies in NYC subways. That could get you killed, and not because you stumbled on a suicide bomber.
Speaking of which, I've heard of some trend in London, and I'll probably get the name wrong, something like happy slap? - Someone shoots digital video of you, and then when they're done slaps you? If this is true - DO NOT, I repeat, DO NOT try this in NYC. All those times you spout off about how violent we are and the guns we love to use? SLAPPING people without provocation has a very good chance of resulting in you living out your fantasies of US violence. ESPECIALLY in NYC. We are very, very protective of our personal space, given that we don't have much of it.
Don't worry about my personal safety. I have NO intention of ever visiting NYC. I value my personal space too much. Fortunately, I live in a very nice rural area of the UK that youthful HAPPY SLAPPING has yet to reach.
to be honest i dont know anyone who ever has or ever would happy slap.the only thing we've considored filming on phones is the school twats when they come over to take the mick and slag people off.then we could proove what theyv done

That is excellent use of new technology!
I'm amazed that the police aren't using mobile phones to photograph suspects/drunks. Link that with a verbal report that is audio-typed back at the station ready for the copper when he/she returns there, so that he/she can just validate the transcript against his/her report and voila, coppers spending more time on the beat for virtually no extra cost.
But the Conservatives and the New Conservatives (Labour) just spout about increasing police numbers on the beat, without regard to what they actually do "on the beat", and continue to lumber them with paper-work back at the station.
