Was wondering if people have any "unwritten rules" as regards music. I have two main ones.....
1 I don't like long songs ie over 5 minutes. If a song goes on for say seven, eight or nine minutes then I have lost interest long ago. Of course there are good "long songs" but as a general rule around between 3 and 5 five mins is usually enough for me.
2 I can never listen to music in the mornings and actually find morning music irritating. Around 12 noon is the earliest I'd contemplate listening to music and most times it 's an afternoon or nightime activity.
Just though of another one- never listen to music on tinny speakers- again it just annoys me and overhearing other peoples ipods with tinny rap just doubles the agony. I may come up with some more but those I've mentioned always concern me.

Only one. If Phil Collins is involved it's bound to be cr@p.

Have to disagree with both your rules Noel as I love long songs and find some songs I love are too short! Of course this is only the case in music I like as the shorter rubbish songs are the better Plus I need music every waking hour! I hate the chat shows we are forced to listen to on the radio in work and would much prefer music as 9am is too early to engage my brain for chat shows! I agree regarding the tiny speakers though as music sounds much better on big speakers or when using headphones the dj style ones are best! BTW ArrGee I love Phil Collins

Never try to listen to music you love in the car whilst children are with you. They ruin the best bits by asking either are we nearly there yet or where does the universe end ... and the music never really quite reaches you in the same way it should. And I never know the answers to the questions anyway!!

I find that turning it up very loud, singing along at the top of your voice and bouncing in the driver's seat normally shuts them up. At that point they are so scared you will crash, they dare not ask questions

1 means it is not possible to be a Pulp fan. Also I always select long songs on the jukebox to get my money's worth. Won't Get Fooled Again is 8m 33s long and Love Reign o'er Me is about 6 mins but are the best things The Who did. And Fools Gold and I am The Ressurection are the pinnacle of The Stone Roses. If the song takes 10 mins then so be it as long as it's not endless repetition. Another Piece of Cr@p is too long at 2m 40s
2 never get the chance these days, but when XFM was decent I used to like listening to it in the bathroom and the car.
Totally agree with the tinny speakers, or even worse mobile phones on a bus. Oddly happened a lot to me in Dublin on the 79A to/from Park West

Will give it a try ..... and hopefully won't get stopped by the police!!
Most long songs are just padding out- thank god the Rats didn't ever get self indulgent and bore us with really long songs. Long songs gave prog rock a bad name, when the shorter prog songs can be good- once they don't start meandering all over the place for fifteen mins.
One of my favourite long songs is Ducks On A Pond by The Incredible String Band, probably about eight mins long but a bit like Bohemian Rhapsody it has different movements and never gets boring or repetitive.
