Most embarrassing record/cd in your collection

Come on guys - what's the most embarrassing item in your record collection? What's the cd you kick under the sofa if the cool new neighbour comes to visit unexpectedly?

For me, it's a seven inch single of the eighties band King - "Love and Pride" and a compilation cd called "Truckin'"...

btw Franna, DITHON doesn't count!

None of my CDs are embarassing to me.  However, the CD I would whip out last with friends & family would probably be actor Crispin Glover's album, "The Big Problem Does Not Equal the Solution, the Solution Equals Let It Be."  This has to be one of the most eccentric albums out there.  Rat catching, concubines, Hitler, clowns, masturbation, pushing-racism, & Charles Manson are just a few things he sings about.  I'd have to do a lot of explaining if I were to casually put it on for company...

I chose all my CDs so they definitely aren't embarrassing. I did once own a Bucks Fizz tape. Oh dear why did I admit to that. I don't own it any more, honestly.

Runs off and hides in corner and covers face.

ArrGee you have more REM albums than I do!! I'm not in the least bit embarrassed to say I own REM albums and 14 U2 albums.

A desire for some good music obviously possessed

ArrGee, you bought the U2 albums bacause you know you'd eventually donate them o a good cause ...ME!!!  No reason for me not to have backup copies, and the UK designs are probably different.  (HEY - your Achtung Baby has the photo of Adam's uncovered penis!  Send that one first!  In the US, it's covered with a shamrock!)

The REM, well, I can't help you there.  No idea what possessed you.

A New Morning, though not their greatest moment isn't embarrasing.  Loads of people bought it, realised it was sub standard and never played it again.

The truly embarrassing ones are those you chose to buy knowing full well how naff/uncool they were but you still liked them regardless.

So maybe I shouldn't have mentioned those U2/REM albums. I only realised how naff/uncool they were when I heard them. And as I don't like them, they don't get played.

Difficult to think of an embarrasing album I truly like and listen to now and again.  I suppose the first couple of Whitney Houston albums would count, but it's a few years since I listened to them.  Maybe a good time to listen to them again.

ArrGee U2 and REM CANNOT be on anyone's list of embarrassing records! I'm glad you have decided to back track, whatever your reason might be

I had a Whitney Houston tape too. I think I only played it once, if at all. Oh dear that isn't as embarrassing as my other tape though. Why ever did I admit to that?

Ah, lucky you!

The shame of it all is I bought them en masse (well the REM ones).  Woolies has a sale and they were all about £2.99, and I thought REM weren't too bad, so I got half a dozen of them. Big mistake.  Even worse, I bought Monster later on!

As for the U2 ones, it was a case of diminishing returns.  I liked Boy & October, so bought the next four which got worse and worse until I could stand it no more.

I find having them embarrassing, because I generally slag both off to all and sundry and it's a bit like being found wearing women's underwear (not that that has ever happenend!).

Still, at least they aren't on my shelf anymore. Packed away in storage.  Keep meaning to sell a whold load of CDs on eBay, but always too busy....

wait, wait, WHAT?

Speaking as a U2 fan, I could see where someone might not like Joshua Tree, Rattle & Hum, or even, if they were high, Achtung Baby, but UNFORGETTABLE FIRE??  Have ye lost yer mind, man??  That thing is a masterpiece!!!!

It's got "Bad" on it for god's sake!

I'm ranting hyperbolically here - everyone has different tastes and that's what makes things great - in fact, I too, at one point had all the REM, and later outgrew it and donated them to science (though I have to disagree with you again - thought Monster was one of their best, and still think New Adventures in Hi-Fi is a damn near masterpiece), so, hats off to you!

And Franna - to be a total U2 nerd here - there are two censored versions of the Achtung Baby cover - one with a Shamrock and one with a red "X"!

I know.  My statement was technically incorrect.  Sadly, I have the shamrock version.  Like any red-blooded girl, I'd prefer the uncensored.

Billy Ray Cyrus...

...but it breaks my heart that I'm embarrassed by it...it's achy almost...

It was one of those albums that you buy and you love it...and ALL of the songs are beautiful...and you are alone for four or five months of the year because all of your friends are gone back to university and you are teaching...
So...you learn all of the songs...you are actually not that keen on Achy-breaky heart anyway...but that man sure does know how to belt out a love-ballad...

You even think about telling other people what a beautiful...almost non-country album it is...but before you are able...the fad has died...and you "perhaps more embarrassing" stop listening to the album all together...

Plus...he talks to you...and has gentle eyes...full of wisdom that Billy Ray...
(Funny...my George Michael used to talk to me too...he was more funny than full of wisdom...doh...oh my G%#!)

I am going to bed...why I subject myself to myself I don't know...weirdface

I remember years ago that my boyfriend of the time kept buying me Boyzone Cds even though I didn't like them!! His attitude was he'd get them anyway which was irritating. let me tell you he is long gone! But I'm not one to throw out cds so I still have them. I've alot of crap I got free & I've kept them as they come in handy when people are looking for stuff..smile

I must have missed this thread when it started.  I'm sure I have lots of embarrassing ones in my collection and, ArrGee, most definitely not my U2 ones, lol.
Musicmania - my husband played guitar on one of the tracks on the Boyzone album - hmm perhaps I should be embarrassed admitting that!!

Would your father be embarrassed by it? Has he played guitar for anyone, ahem, more impressive? smile

Hey, you never told me that! I'll have to go buy the album now...

Well my record collection is packed full of albums you music snobs would be embarassed by! Between me and my husband, our taste range from Celine to Geldof, from opera to bluegrass, with a side trip into show tunes, heavy metal and techno. I don't give a damn if it's in or not. If I like it, I buy it biggrin

I'm a Cars fan; I'm not allowed to be embarassed by anything in my music collection.  smile   [Other people are embarassed for me...]  Albums I have but don't listen to very much lately include:  the Greatest Hits albums of Sweet, Dr. Hook and the Raspberries in my CD collection.

The albums I don't necessarily play for people include Eddie Cantor's Greatest Hits and Getchertiktz (which is a spoken word album by Ric Ocasek, Alan Vega & Gillian McCain), because most people I know just don't like that kind of thing.  Personally, I'm not embarassed to own it; in relistening to it last year, I found I have a better appreciation for the album.

Regarding the other albums mentioned before, Crispin Glover's primal screams during the song "These Boots Are Made For Walking" I think were well worth hearing.  [I don't own the album, but my husband's cousin does, so I heard it once.  I did get to see Crispin during one of his book reading tours at a nightclub and he was really fantastic.]

Linda, welcome to the group; I adore your posts so far.  Music can really speak to us on many levels.

Peace & take care,
debm

Well said & I agree music is a personal choice & the world would be boring if we all liked the same. I love most types of music & I once went to see Lionel Richie on a Monday & Whitesnake the following night!! Strange mix but that is me!! smile

I don't think he has (it's my husband not my father! he's not that old) apart from for Boyzone again on the Childline cd and he got his name on the album as well.  Both times the track was done separately, he wasn't actually in the studio with them.  With the first track they used it on the tour.  How do I know? ok I went to see them - how embarrassing is that!!

Woops, Sorry I was working nights last week & was half asleep when I was posting.biggrin
I find it very unsettling that bands/artists record songs separately & then put them together. I know it happens all the time but its so fake. weirdface

I have that & don't see it as embarrassing. Do you like the songs?? If so there is no shame. As I stated earlier in this topic music is personal choice & I don't believe in embarrassing albums, well except for the Boyzone ones which were an unwanted present, ha, ha biggrin
