Blu Ray versus standard DVD

Does anyone have any opinions about high definition Blu Ray versus ordinary DVD? Not too long ago Blu Ray seemed to be the next big thing in the home entertainment sphere- giving superb 1080p picture quality to watching movies at home, but at such a prohibitive price, especially just for the odd once off movie.

My experience is that undoubtedly there is a difference is the picture quality, but it only works on certain kinds of films, and a lot of movies can be enjoyed on standard DVD without any problem.

Its normally the big epic type movies that benefit from Blu Ray, things like Avatar, Alice In Wonderland (Depp), Troy, about the Greeks fighting the Trojans is superb with all the detail, the Japanese sci fi fantasy Casshern again is brilliant and the Blu Ray version shows off the intention of the director, as there is so much going on in the colour and texture, never mind the extras clarity the detail of the film gives off.

Finally most films are pretty ok/good on standard DVD. Certainly in Ireland Blu Ray discs tend to be very expensive in comparison with the ordinary version so it is usually a matter of looking out for a good value second hand Blu Ray rather than buying the prohibitively expensive HMV version. The changeover to Blu Ray being the only format is not exactly happening, and as high definition downloading is probably how most films will be 'purchased' in the next ten years the future of the Blu Ray disc is a bit like the future of the cd.

Only one way to decide - FIGHT!!!!

I am still on DVD and it's perfectly fine on my 32" TV.  HD doesn't make much difference on smaller screens, just a little sharper.

Highly unlikely blu-ray will become dominant with internet download of HD content.

I can't even be bothered with 3DTV, another gimmick.

Maybe on a TV like the Philips 50PFL7956H (with a 21:9 aspect ratio),  you could see the difference.  Should be easy enough for Santa to stick one down my chimney side on.

One way to sample high definition for free is the Vimeo website, which is where arty guys and girls upload their hi def short films.

The difference is picture quality is obvious. Most people are happy enough with the standard dvd/720p format. If you asked the ordinary man on the street what 1080p was I doubt he would know.

While I buy the occasional Blu Ray disc the price difference makes it an occasional treat, despite the improved quality and amazing detail.

Wasn't there some sort of cd's that allegedly delivered more bang for your buck in terms of audio quality, whereby the back catalogues of all the usual suspects was raided to again sell us something we had bought in three or four different formats already.

Before DVD there was laserdisc, an lp sized disc that cost over a hundred quid just for a movie which was a prototype dvd.

They must think we're all suckers.

Yep.  Watch the film at the cinema, then buy ait on VHS, then DVD, then Blu-ray and then pay to download it.

There are albums I have on cassette (well had), LP and CD, and now I'm expected to pay to download them.

What hacks me off is when they re-release an album with bonus tracks/bonus CD so you end up paying twice.  Arcade Fire did this recently with The Suburbs, releasing a new version on CD.

My son has used it as ribbon on wrapping paper - it looks better than it sounds!!  Though admittedly there must be more fun you could have with it  ...
