Does anyone have any favourite albums of 2011, or singles, for that matter?
Listened to a few more of less brand new acts this year, and must say overall I feel underwhelmed by most of them. Much hyped Vaccines were just that, with a pityful two or three decent songs on their debut album and a dull stage presence live.
A certain Mr Geldof's album disappointed me, without being awful I had hoped for something a bit better, but I'd rate it 6/10.
Haven't heard Radiohead's King of Limbs but they normally do not disappoint. My general view is that music is becoming a bit boring and looking at lists of best tracks and albums from 2011 leaves me feeling a bit cold and disinterested.
Old music just seems to work better. Brian Eno's Baby's on Fire was a track I only discovered this year, though it was written in 1974- nothing I've heard this year could touch it in terms of a tune and lyrics.
Baby's On Fire by Brian Eno was a song I discovered while watching some YouTube video, and it struck me instantly as a great song, but the video did not indicate who the song was by, so I had to look it up.
It was an example of musical serendipity, discovering something good while not actively looking.
It is really interesting to totally like a song on the first hearing, and to see enough in the music to want to check it out further, and feel that there might be something special, just after one listen.
Or as Mark Radcliffe might say, some might think it's 'just cobblers!'

Just looking through the list of albums on Wiki, released in 2011 and there are a few which I might like, but haven't heard yet.
This list includes Radiohead King of Limbs,
Patrick Wolf's Lupercalia,
Hard Fi's Killer Sounds,
M83's Hurry Up Were Dreaming
British Sea Power- Valhalla Dancehall
Wire- Red Barked Tree
PJ Harvey - Let England Shake
Kaiser Chiefs - The Future is Medieval
All of these acts for me are old reliables, tending to come up with the goods, it's just I haven't gotten 'round to hearing the albums yet.
Re singles I've no idea what a single is anymore but possibly Moves Like Jagger by Maroon 5/Christena Aguilera qualifies and is one of the better, interesting also in that I keep hearing it, yet tend not to be irritated when most pop singles are beyond rubbish.
Finally well done to the Irish Police for not recognising Bono on Grafton Street as he attempted to sing some hyms, and asking him to move on and not to be 'disturbin' de peace'.
Finally I am not to fond of Here's To You by Bob Geldof, it is one of the tracks I skip when playing his album. Mary Says or How I Roll or Blowfish would have made much better singles, and are not full of trite sentiment.

Well they can't be highlights then!
I just got Velociraptor! by Kasabian, but not heard it all yet. Also would like to hear a few others like Gruff Rhys, but not got around to them.
I did buy a few singles in the end this year on 7", What A Life - High Flying Birds, If you wanna - The Vaccines, and Arctic Monkeys - Don't Sit Down 'Cause I've Moved Your Chair. Other than that, didn't see too many proper singles (Sadly sha la la la was a victim of the riots), though I did get a freebie at Rough Trade East the other day (Dalmation / Self Esteem / Slow Club - Precious Things) which was quite good.
Must say that St Vincent (Annie Erin Clarke) ex Polyphonic Spree is very impressive. Just checked a few of her songs on YouTube and she certainly delivers so she may be worth further investigation. She's on 4AD records who are well known for quality acts.
Real Estate - It's Real, off their album Days. Heard a Domino Sampler and it's kicking. Also Gruff Rhys - An Athiest Christmas.
Unemployment has many benefits, fixing up the house, listening to records, practicing on my bass, putting all the MOTDs on V+ onto DVD, spending time in charity shops finding rare Smiths singles for 50p and learning French. Shame I have a job interview next week. With my luck I'll get the job. Was hoping my wife would go and earn some corn so I could learn this little ditty..
Our local labour exchange has gone to rack and ruin
Cos there is so many new blokes signing on each week
And to be a layabout of any standing
That means dodging work SEVEN days a week
Oh its really spoiled it for us regular patrons
We have to queue for hours to get our fifty bob
Our local labour exchange has gone to rack and ruin
So I reckon I will have to find myself a job
Oh they are taking filthy diabolical liberties
They are flocking in as if they own the place
Now the bloke behind the counter is getting worried
"OH Yes"
The smile is disappearing from his face
Oh its getting like me mothers bingo meetings
Each member out to make a couple of bob
Our local exchange has gone to rack and ruin
So I reckon I will have to find myself a job
Oh I think I will start a layabout trade union
So we could all stand together for our rights
And if they give us no satisfaction
There would still be nothing left for us to do but strike
It makes you feel like sitting down and sob
Our local labour exchange is all to rack and ruin
So I reckon I will have to find myself a job
"OH YES"
I reckon I will have to find myself a job

There's always the consolation of the Idler website, for those of us who think the work ethic is a bit totalitarian and overrated.
What's that Franz Ferdinand song about only working 'when we need the money' Oh yeah it's called Jacqueline- it goes 'it's always better on holiday/So much better on holiday'. Sums up my attitude!

Bought a copy of St Vincent's debut album called Marry Me (2007) and it is one of the best albums I've heard in ages and I'm normally pretty hard to please when it comes to music.
