Here is the link to Wolfgangs Vaults for both San Diego shows and the Roxy, Hollywood in 1979. The Roxy is just a five song set.

You can listen for free and the sound  quality is pretty good. These versions of Mondays are from a few months before the song became a hit in Europe so in that sense that are very interesting.

Theres also a very short snipped from Rotterdam Free festival in 1978 so a more complete version of this may exist.

'Maidin mhaith a chairde' (A very good mornin')

In between bouts of working here, a wee bit of time for some Rat Chat also needs to be in the schedule

Last weekend I finally got my music loving hands on some radio broadcast CD's of the Boomtown Rats, and I must say, the two I have started on have proved fantastic listening!

Hammersmith 1982 (a topic already on the board about that one) is a gem, wonderfully recorded with a great set list

Boston Orpheum, March 1980 - I had this one last night, and after a ropey start (the sound not as sterling as the '82 one) I found it a terrific document of the show, the sound really improving as it went on. The set list is brilliant, the 'Surfacing' songs sounding damn good to these ears!

San Diego, 1979 - the sound on this one wasn't anywhere near as good as the Boston show, I made it through a few songs but need to give it a proper listen

I am saving Cleveland 1979 & Middlesex Poly1978 to give some Rats kick this weekend

- As a neophyte to these Live Rats broadcasts, and maybe starting with the best (Hammersmith '82 & 'Boston '80) - I am here to ask the Rat faithful, the well versed in Boomtown lore what to go for next..are there essential discs to have; either radio broadcasts of audience tapes?

I've got a passable recording of Newcastle June 82 which was a Radio 1 broadcast (on FM luckily). Can whack that onto CD for anyone who's interested.

There is an audience tape from Milan I think, 1982, is that supposed to be good?

There are two nights in San Diego both on Wolfgang's Vault.  Also there is a short gig at Roxy Hollywood which is worth a listen.

Newcastle as mentioned is very good. Also there is Riveria Theater, Chicago from 1980 worth giving a go.

There is also a bootleg from Stockholm, that sounds like it was recorded in a pub from 1978.  It sounds good as there is so little crowd noise.

But the ones worth chasing are Glastonbury 1985, which can be got here http://www.mediafire.com/?3dfoz51qrua and Self Aid from 1986, particularly the version of Joey.  There is an LP of this called Ireland & Dubliners(bootleg vinyl LP) Bandito Records - B005

I don't know of any MP3s of this. I would love it for my birthday at the end of next month biggrin (or The At Home & Away tape)

There are also live bootlegs from Frankfort 1980 and Seattle 1981.

The link to the Rats bootleg listings is here- Credit to ArrGee in compiling the list-there are probably a lot more eg the Far East 1980 and a famous gig in Athens in 1982 when there was a mini riot.

Excellent, thanks ArrGee and Noel for those recommendations, I shall hunt them down!

The San Diego I have isn't great; vocals very clear but the instruments very low in the mix; maybe the 2nd night is better!

If you loved the Hammersmith '82 gig then you'll also love the Milan gig. Not such a great recording but still pretty darn good. It also has a few tracks you may not have heard the Rats play such as Stir It Up, Knock On Wood and Show Me.

There is also a gig from Oslo 5/8/79.

Do you have the Dave 12inch with the Banana Republic live track on the B side. A must have if you can still find it.

Greetings Ian,

On your recommendation I shall get a hold of Milan '82 so; nice to have different setlists as most boots seem to be from the '79/'80 tours

I don't have the Dave 12", will give that version of 'Banana Republic' a listen though if it's on YouTube

Here's a site offering the Rats in Tokyo 1980 on CD. Seems a fairly reputable site but perhaps read the FAQ's and think about sending for a cd rather than downloading. At least the option is open. Not sure if this site works by having something to trade in return for the cd you're looking for, so you'll have to figure out how it works.

Presume this is the audio of the missing concert video from May 1980.

That'd be great Suss, thank you very much!!

I see the Feds are taking away a lot of stuff^ I took your advice ArrGee and got 'Glastonbury 1985' - it is brilliant!!! Magnificent sound, the set list very good, 'Hurt Hurts' was a big surprise

I looked for 'Seattle 1981' & 'NHK Tokyo 1980' - but am having trouble finding them (I don't torrent, so depend on mediafire, filesonic...etc), maybe the Feds have removed those ones too; if anyone has a link, please let me know

I've just found a site offering the Seattle gig 1981 on either cd or mp3.Price is ten dollars which in Euros is E7.65 for the mp3.

They include a free sample of Up All Night from that concert, and I must say, not having heard this before, that it is one of the best live Rats songs I've ever heard. Anyone wishing to hear the Rats at their live best can just sample this for free.Sound quality is excellent and what are the chances, the gig was on St Patrick's Day, Geldof urging everyone to get tanked on green beer at the end of Up All Night.
