Would a new single create some more interest?

New songs could work well. But would the band members agree on what they want? GELDOF would want the biggest say (why did my phone put his name in capitals lol), would the others put up with it?

I don't see why they cannot come up with new songs. A great band never loses it, and surely Geldof has lots to say- so why not use the Boomtown Rats as his vehicle, like in the old days?

Yes and no. It all depends on what the objective is. To sell tickets, yes. To have a top twenty hit, then forget it. Not a hope. Arguably the biggest alternative band in the world right now are The Black Keys and they struggle to dent the top 100 with any single release. Blur arguably one of the bigger comebacks only managed #34 with their last single, and Pulp made #101. The Stones made #61 and Weller made #66 . Bowie hit #6, but that was exceptional.

But if they want to get some airplay, and make the Jonathan Ross/Graham Norton TV appearances interesting then a new song would be superb. What it may do is sell a few tickets for the shows and make a few people think there is more to them than Mondays. If Geldof does get interviewed anywhere in the next four to five months, they must resist playing Mondays. Anything but that, and a new song would be the best of all.

The most likely direction of a new sound, I think, would be akin to some of the songs on Geldof's solo album How To Compose. Tracks like Blowfish and Systematic Six Pack. I don't expect any real chart action, who knows, but the charts nowadays are totally rubbish and meaningless (unless the potential new song is a hit!)

Bands like Pulp and Blur were never really away for long enough to be real comebacks, more like temporary break ups. I would be a bit weary of Geldof turning up on tv shows still doing Mondays. Surely he is fed up of that song, and so are most of the audience. Geldof has constantly criticised modern music, in all its forms, as being pretty ghastly- the only way he can credibly make a difference is if he writes a few new classics than earn him some new respect. He famously said he formed the Rats because all the music he heard back in the seventies was c**p, and surely the same applies today, if not more so.

I still stand by the maxim that great bands never loose it. Geldof, so far, has shown no signs of wanting to retire from the music biz, if anything his career is solid enough. Pete Briquette can come up with some interesting and unusual ideas for songs viz Scream In vain, Simon Crowe has co written some of the Rats tracks in the past, so at least in theory, some of the old magic can be reignited.

If there is a new album into the future, it most likely will avoid the overembellishments and experimentation of V Deep and Mondo Bongo and go for a more basic pared down sound and approach.

Talking of a new single got me going through my old BTR singles and i came across a sinlge not i forgot about I think it was only ever put in Ireland ( might be wrong) It's called Go man go and i was jsut thinking does anyone other than me have this record

I think you're right - only put out in Ireland and Japan?

The mystery is why only 2 songs were put out from Mondo Bongo in the UK. A third was commonplace in the early 80s to support or reinforce album sales.

Great track and like Hurt Hurts was obvious single material.

Thanks for that, yeah not sure the reason behind that, regarding the two singles in the UK. Some good songs on that LP which in my opinion was well over looked by the UK press

Yep, we definitely need new songs - at least an album's worth. Can't think of the last time we had a quiz - must have been the fruit one about 2 years ago. So we need some more material to use ... The only quiz offering at the moment I have is 4 BTR songs with animals in the title.
