Not sure if a 50 minute set is worth the money, if only going for the Rats. Hopefully there will be more gigs with longer, more ranging sets that will get to air lots of the songs they have not played for years, and some new ones too.
Iow is the 'big one', but I suspect Cork and Devon will be more enjoyable and fun.
No, they won't! I won't be there IOW will be great, and I'm sure there will be other good bands to catch aside from Blondie of course. And I'm sure there will be a little sunshine not to mention some good company .... (damn, any chance of a refund?)
Oh yes, and there will be a nice boat trip, and sand and icecreams. What more do you want? But hopefully not sand in the icecreams.. and a few drinks perhaps!

Pretty sure they wouldn't claim that, and even more certain punks would refute that claim, but take your point about versatility.
If only the set was 90 minutes eh? Could include all those. although I'm not a massive fan of the latter. Think the other thread on set list covers fairly well what people would have liked, but most people didn't expect time to be quite so limited.

You going to IOW?
I like the label 'new wave' to describe them. They were sorta punk, new wave, pop, and rock. Certainly Tonic and Surfacing would fit the new wave bracket. First album was punk/r and b/.
Saw on some site that someone described Mondo Bongo as the Rats moving into 'world music'. Must have been the handful of tracks that had some bongo on them. Most of Mondo Bongo was just straighforward pop/rock/new wave/
V Deep is hard to easily label. Lots of variety. In The Long Grass was basically very intelligent melodic rock/pop. Way better than most bands in the mid eighties, but not seen as 'alternative' despite the fact that I'm very hard pressed to find any band as good as the Rats were at that time. Sad that their mainstream audience had vanished, when they were writing songs this good.That's why I'm so interested in any new songs. The post ITLG sound intrigues me, though I doubt the band will be studying any particular follow up sound to ITLG.
I thought in the Long Grass was an excellent Album. Maybe if it has been released in 1982 it may have delayed the inevitable, but the fact is by that time the Rats time in the sunshine was over. They were never seen as alternative.......in the way say that the Smiths were.
Never been that fussed about a band needing to be massive in order to justify me liking them. As long as the Rats made good music, then as long as a few others liked them then it was good enough for me. It was a shame that they split after ITLG, cos I think they finally found a sound and style that suited them after the experimentation of Mondo Bongo and V Deep.
To be honest, I don't really care what they play at the Isle of Wight cos I'm not going. And no matter what else they play, Absolute Radio will most probably broadcast Mondays and Rat Trap. Cork and Devon will be more interesting sets.

Re Smiths when I was growing up I was always a bit shy. Funny that a band with a very outgoing singer ie the Rats, held more appeal than did Morrissey and his super sensitivity persona. Yes,of course the Smiths were a good band, but I always preferred the Rats.Then again I always thought Echo and the Bunnymen were way superior to The Smiths-maybe it's just my taste.
Sometimes it's hard to define 'alternative'. Normally it's good, sometimes it's just posers dressing up and getting all the limelight. lyrically and musically the Rats music speaks for itself. Kinda weird that someone like Morrissey does not think much of the Boomtown Rats, but he can make his own mind up for himself.

It was the first gig announced and expected to be their first public appearance. It was billed as a UK exclusive. Had people known of the others they may not have bothered getting tickets.
I think it's a very smart move to appear there first. No comeback regarding ticket sales and a sharp set to generate interest in forthcoming dates. If permitted, they should try and do another big festival before the end of the summer. Glastonbury and Reading/Leeds are both televised on BBC.

There are certainly plenty of other great bands, just not all on the same day. In an ideal world, Blondie, Killers, Paul Weller, Stone Roses and Happy Mondays would all play on the same day as The Rats. Overall it's a pretty good line up except for the Sunday headliners getting three hours. IMHO 15 minutes would be a quarter of an hour too long for them.
