I must say I really enjoy 'V Deep', and even though it probably is the weakest of the Rat's work, it speaks volumes for their work that this album is so good in itself.

When it comes to the more experimental Rats, 'Bongo' is better than 'V Deep' of course, 'Bongo' is filled with top notch material with only a few fillers. It's a great album, and sounds, to me, as fresh today as it must have done then.

'V Deep' - from the first time I heard it I loved it; through the years some tracks didn't stand up and would be called 'filler' I s'pose, but others are just so good.

'The Little Death' is a track I love, I never knew it was poorly rated by a number of fans (reading the posts on another thread) - I love the atmosphere, the bass line, Geldof's delivery; the drum crashes at chorus end "..the litle death". Jazzy, melodic, and unique.

'Talk in Code' is another of my top favourites from this opus. Very Kraftwerk in places, the synth rhythms that recall that robotic, detached cool acts like Kraftwerk had.

'House on Fire' of course is excellent, never tire of hearing it, love the longer mix included on the 2005 Remaster. Ditto 'Up all Night'.

'He Watches it All' always reminded me of Syd Barrett era Floyd in the opening moments and verse, very atmospheric track.

'The Bitter End' sounds so Bowie-ish with the background chant, not a great track as some of the above, but as with even the weaker tracks on 'V Deep', some interesting ideas and verry listenable.

'A Storm Breaks' - such a unique sound, the eerie first half with faint-banshee vocals (Simon?), and the brass section thumping second half. Great stuff!

Of the remainder, 'Never in a Million Years' is a good, but falling short of great, Rats ballad. 'Charmed Lives' is for me the weakest track, seems so throwaway when compared to the more exotic ideas on the album's best tracks. 'Skin on Skin' like 'Million Years', good but just shy of morphing into something great.

To be fair I myself have been given this cd a wee turn more than I did b4. So hard to beat House on fire. Should have done much better in the charts than it did way back in 82 Its one of them song that give's you a bit of a lift, Also like Up all night but I do think the us one is much better. Skin on skin also does it for me and He watches it all, should have been a single. This was the 1st rats cd I got way back in 83 I think I paid £16,99 for it And I did not even have a cd player took another few years for that to happen
