Adam Ant, Ruts DC and Edwyn Collins will play a free open-air gig in Soho next week in support of independent record stores on a stage erected on the junction between Berwick Street and DArblay Street to celebrate Record Store Day, on Saturday 19th April 2014.
Now if only I can persuade Mrs. ArrGee to forego our Easter trip to the National Theatre....
Instead of treating the crowd to big hits like 'Stand and Deliver' the singer also spoke about how badly he had been treated by the music industry.
Fans say Ant, 59, "stumbled and mumbled" throughout the lack lustre gig, with some comparing it to the infamously shambolic concerts of troubled singer Amy Winehouse.

Adam Ant just seems to be a sad parody of what he was 35 years ago. Just out of curiosity I watched some of his recent tv appearances and they were pitiful. The Norma Desmond/Sunset Boulevard delusion that he is some sort of relevant star is sad- looking like a reject from Pirates of the Carribean. Some rock stars age with good grace and self respect. Unfortunately Adam Ant is not one of them.
I was never a big fan- I thought Adam and the Ants paved the way for bands like Culture Club and Duran Duran and all that New Romance nonsense. Dressing up and making 'glamorous' videos was more eye catching than good music. Did for The Rats in the end.Though any mental problems Adam Ant may be suffering from I with sympathize with him let me add...

I do like earlier Antz stuff like Dirk Wears White Socks and Kings of the Wild Frontier, but for me he lapsed into parody from Prince Charming onwards. I quite like his current pirate phase, I'm all for rock stars growing old disgracefully!
I don't go along with the idea that new romantics and the like did for the Rats. The Stranglers, The Police and The Damned were all having hits, and The Jam were at their peak at the same time.
BTW Jon Moss the drummer with Culture Club did play with the Damned (replacing Rat Scabies for a short while) and with Adam and the Antz on the Cartrouble single.

By the mid eighties you might say 'serious pop' (ie most new wave/punk) was replaced by more frivolous fare. One does not necessarily thing of The Stranglers or The Damned when one thinks of the eighties. Even big hits like Golden Brown were a bit of a fluke- I didn't realize there was than many closet junkies in Britain! Every Breath You Take must be one of The Police's most mundane tracks , yet it was a bit hit.
I suspect there was a big difference between those who bought singles and those who bought albums back in the day. The more casual fan might have bought a few singles by different bands/artists each week, reflecting the disparate makeup of the charts.
When you think of it most bands have a golden period of about 5-7 years at most when the product their best work. It's true of The Beatles, Stones, Doors, The Who, The Boomtown Rats, Pulp, whoever. The Rats had their time in the late seventies and as the great Echo and the Bunnymen song goes 'nothing ever lasts for ever....

Talking of Echo and the Bunnymen, they had a great single out in '87 called The Game. It was their Elephants Graveyard. Only reached something like 27 but deserved a lot higher.

Yes The Game is a great song. Some bands are just too smart for the charts it could be argued. But the Bunnymen always had a solid fan base, and their albums sold fairly well, for a band selling basically a musical version of Sartre and Camus, etc
