Don't Believe What You Read!
However Bowie, T Rex, The Rolling Stones, Kinks, Squeeze, House of Love, Razorlight, Libertines, The Who, Elvis Costello, The Clash and Iron Maiden - Can any other city claim such luminaries? Maybe New York (though maybe not!)
I think this is interesting. Why do places produce a certain "sound"? Is it really the location that gives the people and their music a particular mood, or is it the other way round: For some reason people coming from the same place make music and with that attract other people to do music too?
Why is for example Manchester a place known for music (correct me if I'm wrong ArrGee)? Here in Germany, we have a number of bands coming from Hamburg, their music is known as the "hamburg school". Mannheim (where??) is a place of outstanding creativity it seems - but how come it happens there and not somewhere else?
Does it have to do with local identity?
And why do some places spawn famous bands like factories, and others don't?

Manchester has, since The Buzzcocks, been the source of many cutting edge bands. The Fall, Joy Division/New Order, James, The Smiths, Happy Mondays, Stone Roses, Oasis and Doves are probably the most famed (just don't mention Simply Red ). The main source of this was Factory records and the Hacienda. The film 24 Hour People gives an insight into this whole movement.
London just happens to be big, so there are lots of bands and movements that originate, but perhaps the most remarkable source of bands in the UK is Sheffield. It's not a big city, but has produced acts like Joe Cocker, Def Leppard, Human League, Heaven 17, ABC, Pulp and the Arctic Monkeys.
Liverpool is famed for its bands such as The Beatles, Echo and The Bunnymen, Teardrop Explodes, The La's, The Coral, The Zutons; this can be sourced to the Cavern (early sixties) and Erics/Zoo Records (early eighties) http://www.liverpoolthen.co.uk/
