What are your good mood songs?

I generally find The Divine Comedy to be good when I feel low. Tonight We Fly.

Good question. Never really thought about it much but some songs definitely have an uplifting effect. The Happening came on Gold the other day by the Supremes and lifted an otherwise boring Thursday afternoon. Will give it some thought and also listen to the tracks suggested.

a few weeks ago I accidentally heard National Express on a shop radio. Hadn't heard it in years.Always love the line about the jolly hostess 'it's hard to get by when your a**e is the size of a small country.... smile

I find myself being very sensitive to song lyrics and mood.So many depressed singers singing about the failed relationships and how awful life is. Or else there is just so much anger and rage etc. It can be a bit depressing. I got a loan of a double Elliot Smith cd from a friend and seriously most of the songs were just so negative it was unbelievable. Sad story of his death though, not to be insensitive.

The radio tends to play random songs so I generally don't listen as i don't like my mood to be in my own hands, as it were. Life is hard enough without the constant moaning of some of our pop stars.

Just listening to the charts of 1973 and hearing God Gave Rock and roll to you and Wizzard, see my baby jive. They both feel very uplifting and cheerful.

Funny you should say that Jules - been giving this thread some thought and just came back on to add a couple that work for me, and first is from similar era.

Both bring a smile to my face anytime, not just when viewing.

Probably dozens of other tracks if I stop to think, but these two came readily.

just had a listen to the Farmer Boys song. Very chirpy, very like the Housemartins. A song in a similar vein is XTC's Sergeant Rock, though probably with a bit more 'cred'. Suss must surely know how to 'work a crowd' as I think he does a bit of djing. He's hardly playing them Leonard Cohen songs. smile

Just hate those TOTP2 captions that just distract from the song, but Sergeant Rock is one of XTC'S finest moments.

I'm a big fan of XTC and think the Mayor of Simpleton from 1989 is wonderful. In a similar vein to the Farmers Boys, who often fell short of the top 40 but only just, are the Bloomsbury Set. Hanging around with the Big Boys was shown on Razzmatazz and they supported Duran Duran in 1983 but they only managed 46 or something.

Perversely some 'depressing' acts also cheer me up. Can't beat The Smiths at the end of a bad day for restoring spirits.

Never heard the Bloomsbury Set track before, familiar with most of the others quoted so far. Interesting range.

I should be citing Glad All Over really - trouble is I also associate it with some nightmare days at Selhurst cry

Thanks to BG and Musicmania, I now love LC and listen regularly. I couldn't argue he is uplifting that would be stretching the imagination somewhat.

Talking of mine and Musicmania's mutual and less popular favourites, Beautiful Day by U2 is uplifting.

Not so much uplifting, but as a positive influence, I have often listed to Thin Lizzy'S Do Anything You Want To before a job interview or similar to inspire me.

I find moody and depressing or snarly, loud, aggressive music more uplifting than happy up beat stuff - maybe I'm weird? Nothing worse in my opinion than being thoroughly fed up and pissed off and then listening to some annoyingly happy person singing a cheerful ditty!

I certainly love wallowing in the desperation, passion and energy of most of the Rats songs

I was listening to Comfortably Numb by Pink Floyd the other day - that's a good song to cheer one up too! But all very interesting how different music affects people - at the moment my constant CD companion in the car is Tourist by Athlete - I love it but hubby says it's dreary and all sounds the same! To which the obvious reply was it's better than all the bloody stuff you make ME listen to!

Like Jules, I also love listening to Thin Lizzy - I think it's the guitars that appeal and the sheer loudness of it all ...

You're right about energy, Lisa. Sometimes, I think it is necessary to get things 'out there' and you may need a blast of the Ace of Spades or something to kick start it!

This always cheers me up.

On XTC'S Oranges and Lemons two mood enhancing songs stand out: Garden of Earthly Delights and Miniature Sun. Then there's the infectious Omnibus from Nonsuch and Life Begins At The Hop.

Another really bright track is Were All Light, from Wasp Star. Andy Partridge writes really complex yet brilliant pop songs that don't insult your intelligence, and seems to have a knack for frequently writing songs that can lift the mood. Another example is Yacht Dance from English Settlement. I remember a few weeks ago I listened to this song about 4 times in a few hours.

love that when i'm in the mood

couple of cheesier songs when i'm in good spirits are happy by pharrell lol

and of course that one that goes 'you know you want it, cos you're a good girl' etc etc thats a cheeky little number

rapture by blondie is a classic

and i'm quite into anastasia too

boomtown rats by boomtown rats, that promo track they did, kind of lifts me too, especially when i imagine dancing around in a bunny rabbit suit to it

Tend to agree, although I still like the track. Could be argued they went more mainstream with Something Else, just before Silly Thing. At least Silly Thing was original, or at least I think it was confuse

Yeah you could be right here. Think Something Else was more of a Sid thing than a Pistols thing > But have to say it didn't stop me from buying them

I've just found a tape from 1989. Terry (of the Specials), Blair (not him) and Anouchka - Ultra Modern Nursery Rhyme. Shame it wasn't a hit. Strangely uplifting despite Hall's deadpan delivery.
