Just thought I would let you know how the Geldof Appreciation Society (GAS) is going on MySpace. We now have 56 members, or friends as they are called, including an American Senator, who lists Bob as one of his heroes and the Trash Pussies. I think that is hilarious, because any bulletins that Jules or myself post on Bob goes straight to his daughter and Fiona's homepage. Whether she reads them is a different matter.
65 and rising! We now have the late John F Kennedy junior as a member. I know Bob has friends in high places......... there are some real characters out there. It is all very entertaining.
I want to congratulate you on doing such an awesome job on the MySpace page.
Like I said before, it's a different audience that is on MySpace. Many are younger folks, but really people of any age can make MySpace into anything they want it too. My friend who runs the Ben Orr site really enjoys it.
I appreciate your bulletins. You have shared some good interviews and articles.
peace & take care,
debm

Thanks for your comments, Debs. I am enjoying doing it. Up to 91 now, but the messaging service is down at the moment, so have to wait to get more. I have asked all 91 to pass on to their friends the link to the Milan video, and so on, and so on... I hope that eventually it will be doing the rounds all over the world. It is a great networking site, and as you say a good opportunity to bring Bob's music to a younger generation. Ages range from 15 to 73, male/female 50/50 and the vast majority of members are from the States, including a Senator. I now have the first 2 parts of Bob in Milan on my videos. Things may change in November when it will cease to be an entirely free site.
A couple of quotes to show that we are getting responses from all over.
This one from USA.
Any fellow Geldof fan is a worthy friend addition. I got to meet Bob briefly when he toured to California for SA&D, but I was too flummoxed to ask for a photo - something I'll always regret. But, I got to interview him last year for the Chicago Sun-Times newspaper, and also made articles for a couple of magazines from the chat. That was a fantastic treat.
Also from the US. This guy had the tenacity, bravery or foolishness, (bravery I think ), to cover one of Bob's songs.
Thanks for the add irene. I to am a Bob advocate here in the states. Have had the pleasure of meeting him twice (the only two times he has come here as a solo artist). In fact I was able to meet him in '93 at The Bottom Line in NY and give him a cassete of a cover I did of A Gospel Song. Not only was I amazed to meet him at the time. He actually came back out from the club to tell me how much he liked the version I did. So under appreciated yet such an influence.
From a 50 year old guy.
I want to get my picture taken with Bob Geldof before I die.
I bet it's fun to see what people say. My friend who runs the other site says she really likes hearing from the younger people.
What part of MySpace will no longer be free in November? I better mosey on over there and find out. [That will be a bummer for someone like me & just when my page was looking so pretty.]

YES , done it. 102 and rising now. Geldof owes me a drink. ( Yes, I know pigs might fly, hell will freeze over and his next single might get to no.1 before that happens) Party in a marquee, on a lawn, in front of a big house in Kent?
Wow! This is really taking off now. (123 as I write) What a unique opportunity to bring Bob' s music to a new and younger audience. When I started this I really had no idea what would happen. The response has been fantastic. I have been specifically targeting those in the music business, bands, artists, journalists etc and those who mention Bob or the BRs in their profiles. Here are more responses.
From a band from Illinois -
thanks so much for the link. I have loved bob from boomtown to now, have every album.
much love
Ontario-
I can't thank you enough for posting those videos of Bob's Milan concert! The quality was great and I found his performance to be dramatic if not as empassioned as some of them I've witnessed live. I particularly loved "Love Or Something Else" in the first one but I was wondering, "Where's Pete?" The cameraman didn't show him much. Not fussy on Bob's gum chewing as it was rather distracting and his hair has certainly looked better but you can't have it all! I thought it was an exceptionally beautiful version of "Walking Back To Happiness" and a fresh version of "Banana Republic". Bob looked at first like he was simply enduring the interviews and wasn't really enjoying them but he softened up later. All in all, a great viewing experience
Irene,Thank you for putting the videos up,they are wonderful.I've enjoyed watching them. Bob is certainly one fantastic man.
And from a new British band
Thanks for the link. Do you like Bob Geldof?
(No , I started the Geldof Appreciation Society because I can't stand the man, want to wash his mouth out with soap, shave his head and put him in a room where they play Clash songs 24 hrs a day)
Another message from the USA. In response to the Milan Review from Jules.
This is freaking awesome....I'm so jealous that you actually get to see Sir Bob up close and personal. I still to this day buy every copy of "Is that it?" and hand it out to wannabe revolutionaries as a primer. And, I STILL can't stand to have a day go by without hearing The Vegetarians of Love at least once....except my 16 year-old daughter keeps stealing it from me.
Sooooo....tell him that he's an inspiration for a revolutionary from the Midwest US who wants to change the world. And tell him I live in "Oklahoma, USA" he'll get it.
Also on board now is JJ Gilmour. Remember him? He is doing a solo tour at the moment by the looks of things. In Glasgow tonight. For those not in the know, he supported Bob in his 2005 tour. www.jjgilmour.com
thanks for the add. i myself and am a very huge fan of geldof and bono alike and admire them for their courage to stand up for everything they believe is right. i also have done alot of fundraising in the past, for various charitys and suchlike, and mainly it was down to mr. geldof who give me the inspiration to fight for what i believe :)
This gets better, We now have on board The Penguin Cafe Orchestra. Who is the violinist with the band? Answers on a postcard please. No prizes, but everyone gets to know what a clever clogs you are. Clue -initials are B. L.
P.S. I am going to need help shortly with my "101 things youmay or may not know about Bob Geldof" blog. I post 1 a week. I am up to no. 8 and only 93 to go. Anyone with any odd facts?
Up to 181 now. Next target is 200. Friends now include The Kaiser Chiefs and The Killers. Still waiting on a reply from F.F. and Paul Mccartney, though I know he has other things on his mind just now.
I am not taking it too seriously. I am having great fun with this. The site is 100% supportive and I have control over comments to be posted. It is great to know that all these people get my Bob blogs every week. Whether they read them or not is a different matter! Also his Milan videos are there and I am hoping to bring his music to a much younger audience. Most of them don't know he does solo music. If any of you have Bob pics, which were taken by you, I will post them there. I am only posting pics with permission. scottie664@fsmail.net
This is the nearest thing to a fan club. I used to be in the David Cassidy fan club. Are there still fan clubs now? We could have an Arr Gee fan club. How many would join?
Anyone can open a myspace site FREE. Come and join us.
I'm so happy this is going so well. A lot of different music groups have official pages, and it does seem like the younger bands like to have a way to say thanks to the people who influenced them.
peace & take care,
debm
PS: At work, we are looking for a celebrity to narrate our DVD which will talk about our non-profit (sort of a new employee orientation/PR for fundraising type of thing). The executive director's comment on my e-mail about who we should ask to narrate, "How about Bob Geldof?" (since he knows I'm a fan).

There is another GAS believe it or not, run by a 15 year old. Since she only has 4 members, I think we take precidence. I am hoping she will join the forum.
My God, Paul McCartney is now a friend. I know it is not him of course , but someone from his team. Still, you never know, he may read it now and then.
John Turnbull has just become the 280th friend. next target-300. So that is 2 of his group on board now. They probably think I am mad and it is absolutely hilarious. Jamie Cullum is also a friend and he does cite Bob as one of his heroes amongst his blurb somewhere. Love to see them duet.
Now up to 335. Have invited the Proclaimers. Will see what happens. I have been browsing the Group section on myspace. GAS is by FAR the largest Geldof one. Some of the others are hilarious. There is a"Leave Bob Geldof Alone"Group, "Sir Bob Geldof Shocked Face Appreciation Society" (love it) , "All hail St Bob Group, "Super Geldof Fans" group and two "Geldof is a Legend" Groups. It is quite fun just browsing.
The Proclaimers are now no.336. I must tell you a story about the Proclaimers, Craig and Charlie Reid, or one of them. I have been a big fan for along time and they also both live in Edinburgh. At my last school I was introduced to 2 prospective parents, Mr and Mrs Reid and their son. Thought nothing of it, chatted to them for a while and they went away. Then it dawned on me MUCH much later who it was. I had not recognided him, (Charlie) without his twin brother Thick,or what?
I have just discovered I have been hacked on myspace. This active control message kept coming up. And there was extra code in my movies section and in all about me on my profile. Managed to delete it, but have managed to delete my profile image as well and it will not take, as yet, another one. Oh well. Had to change my password too.
I only have 25 friends on myspace, but I got 61 at IWIW.
But Reka, I messaged you a while back to ask if you wanted to be my friend and you didn't respond. But maybe you didn't know it was me. If anyone would like to add me, please come over and ask: www.myspace.com/dam9191
peace & take care,

Not good about the hacking. It seems like MySpace does have some issues with that, but if you watch your page it works out. It sounds like you'll be back on track soon.
I know I have some friends who use the music code from other websites (that are not myspace) and I have trouble even visiting their page sometimes. My Explorer ends up shutting down. I know some of those other websites have lots of bugs and viruses too - if I go on a site like that, my anti-virus software lights up like Christmas tree.

It seems ok this mornng. The active X control is a big giveaway. I will know what to look for the next time. Seemingly, they can add the extra codes just by leaving comments about you. And it can affect getting messages. I sometimes get a message in my email saing there is a message on myspace and my inbox is empty. Maybe Reka did not get it.
It is a message stating you need to run an activeX control to run the page. It appears when you try to open your homepage. There is also a funny looking new toolbar, which does not work. If you have not got any of these, you are probably OK.
Hit the 500 mark today. To think we started with 56. It is amazing how many under 20s want to have Bob Geldof's babies! Yes, really. When I was 17 or 18, I thought that someone age 55 was absolutely decrepit. Did you not? Still, it is great how many youngsters actually do like him a lot. And judging by some of their blogs, have sexual fantasies about him too.
He's old enough to be their Grandad His eldest daughter is a few years older than them. Still it's great someone of his age can attract so many young ones. I'd have thought it was a bit naff to like someone that age when I was 16. But then he was he was about 30
You know, I've noticed that with younger people too (with other rock stars as well), but I have a theory.
I think with some of the guys (and bands) that were making videos in the 1980s and these younger women are seeing the videos now. So it's natural that they are seeing someone that they consider attractive (and know is intelligent too). At the time, as Jules has pointed out, they are only in their 30s. [Not as great of an age difference.]
Also, we are more aware that people really stay the same person on the inside. Look at someone like Mick Jagger; there are many people that still find him to be attractive. [OK, he's not my type, but I respect others that may find him that way.]
Maybe this is part of the new sexual revolution. Bring me someone who can subscribe to the AARP magazine (hey, it has some good articles).
peace & take care,
debm

Hit the 6oo mark just in time for Christmas. Still lots of youngsters joining, which is good. Do you know Russell Brand lists Bob Geldof as his hero. Do you think I should send him an invite?
I honestly dont think so. I have heard him say that Bob was one of his heroes and he looked up to him and that is one reason he was so shocked and upset by the insult. I suppose he might want to update his page.
Just hit the 800 mark! Slow but sure. I am trying to gather in lots of Boomtown Rats fans at the moment. I did not know till recently that Gary Roberts runs one of the Rats pages and Simon Crowe's band, Jiggerpipery also has a page. A good way to keep in touch with them.

After a lot of hard work , there are now 1000 members. Thanks to everyone here who supports us. Most of them are under 30 which is great. I am not resting on my laurels, so numbers should contine to rise. Will not have so much time in the next couple of weeks, as myself, my staff and the children and parents, along with (hopefully) local businesses, are aiming to furnish and resource a South African nursery, which has nothing, (the children sit on the floor,) all by the February mid term, when it is all being shipped out- PANIC!. Will let you know how it goes.
1000 members that's great. Where were they all when I was doing that petition?
The project you are working on sounds very interesting. Maybe you could tell us about it when you have completed it? And Myspace - you might inspire others to do it. Imagine if it went around the world and schools/nurseries all over were doing similar projects. We could furnish hundreds of schools!
I asked Michael parkinson (Parky to those in the Uk) to be a friend and he accepted. I said the next time Bob is on his show, he can tell him he is a member of his myspace fan club and see what reaction he gets. Probably not printable! Parky has a sense of humour and he likes Bob. For those not in the know Michael is a top TV chat show host here.
This pretty awesome - over 1000 members. I think that will be funny if the talk show host you just added as a friend asks him that.

I have not posted on this for a while, but we are up to 1400 now. Here are a selection of 300 comments on my page from ordinary folk from all over, just to prove how much Bob is loved and respected around the world.
Bob Geldof is my hero. I want to make a difference in the world much like he has.
Geldof is the greatest. We need more people like him.
Thanks for taking me on board Irene, Bob is a great man, Jo.
i love bob geldof!
I think it's fantastic that you are doing this site. Geldof is a great guy and a realy good musician.
Our live drummer is Niall Power - we have to share him with Bob! Check out our blogs to see the bass Pete used on Live Aid and Bob signed! Mick (From the band Sundrive. They call Niall , Nelly)
Thanks so much...I am honoured and thanks also for carrying on the man and legend that Bob Geldof is and will always ...BE!
I like your idea for your page, Bob Geldof is an amazing man. I will look up to him all my life.
thxs for the Add Request. Boomtown Rats are a awesome band.
I toured with Bob and the Boomtown Rats a long time ago. Feel free to comment or message me or visit my website at: http://www.dlbyron.com
admiration and respect for your appreciation and awareness-raising of a truely great brave courageous empathising loving man from my land ... MPH (MrPhillyHayden)
Bob really is a hero of our time... i'd sell my soul just to meet him. hope to hear from you!
Geldof, is a legend. love him to bits.
I support Geldof in all he does, such a great man
I'm a big fan of Bob Geldof because he combines everything Rock'n'Roll ever was with the fight for a better world
it is so amazing to know there are others in the world who love, respect & follow sir bob in his many ways. i can honestly say i can not imagine my life without his words, actions & music in it.
Thank you for the friend request, as you might have read Bob is one of my heroes. He's been an inspiration to millions of people and I think all his work he's done for all the third world countries is truly amazing. There should be more people like him in the world.
As you probably have read in my profile, Bob is one of my heroes. He is a shining light.
Any fan of Bob's is a friend of mine. Living in America, I can't count the number of times I've had someone say, "Bob WHO?," in response to me telling them who my favorite song writer is. I know he's a great humanitarian as well, but it's Bob's music that has inspired me more than anything else. Thanks for seeking out the MySpace Geldof fans and bringing us together.
AN APPRECIATOR OF GELDOF IS SOMEONE TO APPRECIATE. lOVE AND RESPECT ...
(By the way, check out John Turnbull's voice. He has some solo songs on his page. I think he should bring out a solo album)
Bravo! Good work on your MySpace friends. I've always sensed that there are quite a few people who appreciate Bob for his good work; we've just got to get them introduced to his music.
Peace, deb

I have not talked about this for a while, but G.A.S. is a year old now. We now have 1661 friends, the page has been looked at 6540 times, my Geldof blogs read 4190 times and the concert videos watched nearly 1000 times. Not too bad for something which started off as a bit of an experiment. The primary aim was to bring Bob's music to a younger and wider audience. Most individuals are 16-30. I make sure that everybody knows that it is just a fan site, nothing more. I have chatted to people like Nigel Grainge, Chris Birkett, who was very concerned for Bob after the car accident, and BP Fallon, who won't talk back to me. Most of the people are just ordinary folk, whose lives have been touched by Bob in some way. Some of the comments left on the page are really heartwarming. Some people admire him for his music, some are Rats fans and some admire him for his humanitarian work. But we all have one thing in common,- Geldof. I have had my share of nutters of course, including one guy who was desperate to prove that Bob was very high up in the Freemasons. . Roll on a second year.
I think it's a phishing scam of some sort. When I opened the website, it stated:
"NOTICE:
Access to profile system is limited to cellphone-verified members."
and has a link for you to validate your cell phone.
"(IMPORTANT: You must verify PIN after you enter your number.)"
I don't have a cell phone, but I think they are set up so that they charge people so much per day or week for a "service" and this is probably set up this way. So it is this company's way of getting more of a client base (which doesn't seem very up front).
Stay safe everyone,
Deb

Just hit the 2000 friends milestone. Geldof sure has his bashers out there, but also his admirers, from all over the globe. Just had a poignant message from a lady in Beirut, who has met Bob, on how much he has influenced her life.
Hi just a quick note to say congartulations from everyone at bobgeldof.info passing the 2000 friends is some achievement and all the more so when we know you undertake all the hard work of running Geldof Apprecation Society as a labour of love
i see you to have come across the barmey brigade also but thats goes with the territory iam afraid lol
Thanks Ian, your support is much appreciated. It is amazing who I come across. I was talking to a girl the other day whose father and uncle were both roadies for the Rats, (Phil and Steve). Lots of artists have said they toured with the Rats and also opened for Bob as a solo artist. I am sure I could get some newsworthy stories if I wanted! (Dont worry, I won't) Folk who have worked with him in the recording studio too. Fans who have seen the Rats or Bob in concert. And of course a fair few ladies who, over the years have claimed, well, er ........ (If you believe them). One thing that surprises me is the high number of artists who list Bob Geldof as a musical influence. Maybe it shouldn't surprise me really. I have never thought of it as a labour of love. I just enjoy doing it. I enjoy chatting to people from all over. The only problem can be that some people think I have a direct line to "God", so to speak. I just refer these ones to you Ian. It surprisingly does not take up a lot of my time. Just 10 minutes a day, maybe more at weekends. I am lucky I have the long school holidays too. I have a full time job and am studying for a genealogy degree also just now. Hubby supports me too. He knows it is just a hobby, nothing more. I am not a nutter, or a stalker. I never pass on personal info about Bob. People ask me for his address, but they don't get it. Anyway , will keep going as long as I can. (Hope Bob appreciates it too. He is not really known for appreciating things, is he?)
Congrats on hitting 2000 members to the MySpace Appreciation Society. It is a fantastic accomplishment.
Peace & take care, Deb
