Just on the HMV site and the bands you may care to try if you like the Boomtown Rats are....
ABC
Joe Jackson
The Jam
Bob Geldof
Status Quo
Heaven 17
Re-Flex
Ultravox
The Stranglers
Kajagoogoo
Big Country
The Beautiful South
Squeeze
Showaddywaddy
Adam Ant
Magazine
XTC
Altered Images
Dexy's Midnight Runners
If you like any of the above bar Geldof, they don't recommend you try the Rats! Pretty impressed that Squeeze are there but Kajagoogoo, Status Quo & Showaddywaddy! Give me a break. I suppose I do have records from about half of them.
For the record, if you look up Blondie, T.Rex and The Vapors they do recommend you try the Rats. I think the reverse is more true than some of the above.
The Bowie try these is very impressive, almost on the money for me ....
Lou Reed Roxy Music Brian Eno Iggy Pop T. Rex Pulp Syd Barrett Slade Pink Floyd Queen Suede Talking Heads Elvis Costello Elton John Björk The Arcade Fire Steely Dan Radiohead The Smiths
But the Geldof list is rather sad... (Racey & Rocky Sharpe, mmmmm)
Rocky Sharpe & The Replays U2 The Boomtown Rats Ron Sexsmith R.E.M. Robert Plant Jann Arden Racey Henry Valentino Japan Geier Sturzflug Hubert Kah Spider Murphy Gang Karel Gott The Gun Dschinghis Khan Marianne Rosenberg Mother's Finest The Comedian Harmonists Trans-X
The first three are German Eighties bands - they were known as being part of the "Neue Deutsche Welle" thing - early eighties, German lyrics, punk or post punk inspired.
Karel Gott is a Czech singer who sings (sang) in German a lot, both him and Marianne Rosenberg are singers of something that is called "Schlager"-Musik - quite corny and trashy. Dschingis Khan also belong into that area - Eurovision Song Contest, etc.
And the Comedian Harmonists, well, they're a vocal ensemble from the twenties! They were all superb singers, some songs were a-capella, many with just piano. German lyrics only.
Musically, there's NO connection at all with BG! ^^ Well, except many Germans like BG as a musician, and these bands/artists are all German/sing German.
And I've never heard of these ones:
Rocky Sharpe & The Replays Jann Arden Racey The Gun The Comedian Harmonists Trans-X
Rocky Sharpe & The Replays Jann Arden Racey The Gun The Comedian Harmonists Trans-X
These two were 70s/80s Rock 'n' Roll revivalists.
Racey had a couple of hits (Some Girls & Lay Your Love on Me) and did the original Mickey by Toni Basil (called Kitty written by Chinn/Chapman of Sweet/Mud fame).
Rocky had a couple of hits (Rama Lama Ding Dong/Shout Shout knock yourself out) around that period as well.
Mud, Alvin Stardust, Rubettes, Glitter Band, Showaddywaddy and Darts were of the same ilk.
Poor Geldof. He'd love to be compared with Dylan, but is compared to the dregs.
